Hello everyone. I found this site yesterday while looking for help in rehabing a stray that I had just brought into a cabin on our property. Already I have had some welcomes and some advice, thanks so much for that.
We live in a rural area in northern British Columbia. Right now we are in the middle of winter, and its been a cold and snowy one. But that's January here, and it will pass.
We have 4 cats who are inside. they are 5, 11, 15 and 16 years old. We also have 4 large dogs and everyone gets along fine. The cats never go out in the winter, they don't like to get their feet wet! In summer they will venture out and sit on the front deck, but none seem interested in going far. The oldest one will go for a walk but never out of sight of the house, I don't allow them to go for walks without a dog to keep them company! We have far too many preditor type animals here, and our dogs are great babysitters.
My next move will be to integrate the stray living in the guest cabin into the 4 legged family, but that will take some time. I feel confident it wil happen, I just hope everyone will be on board when it's time.
Anyway, just wanted to say hello and introduce myself and our "second family", I look forward to getting to know others, sometime living in such a rural area in the winter can be a lonely time!!

i would say the cats rule the roost here. All the dogs have a healthy respect for them, and when they say move, the dogs move!! We have a 11 month bull mastiff, and he has had to learn the hard way that the cats aren't his toy! Lucky he has such thick jowels, but he has some nice little scars to show for all of his efforts! In the summer if the cats are out for a walk and a dog barks, they high tail it right back to the house! We have one cat who hunts for the dog, he goes and gets mice, and brings them to the one dog. Not sure what that is about, but they seem to know. who am i to question this.. they don't !!!! I'm just an observer in their world!

Welcome to TCS!

It sounds like such an interesting pet dynamic you have with the dogs and cats. I'm looking forward to hearing more about them

If you have any questions about our site, feel free to send me a PM.

Ok, lets's see if this works! Willow the black and white guy, Lulu, the white calico, Oskar, the mulit colored calico, and Tekeela, sleeping on the couch in "her spot" with a couple of the dogs.

Thanks! We think they're special! Well, let me rephrase that... I think they're special, my husband thinks they are "OK"!! He says that, but when I'm not looking, he will have one on his knee giving ear and chin scratches. Busted!!!
One day I'll get a picture of my semi feral guy "Buddy" who lives in a guest cabin right now. He's coming along way faster than i ever thought he would, so proud of him for overcoming his fears and trying so hard to be unafraid.

Welcome! I wish you the best integrating your stray with the rest of the pack.
I know exactly what you mean about "not letting a cat out without a dog." My friend Josephine has 3 dogs and 5 cats and they all watch out for each other when they are romping around the backyard. The neighborhood dogs are terrified of getting swatted by her cats!

Wow, they do look alot alike! Our Willow was from a litter of 4, him and 3 calico girls. We actually found the litter in a box in the ditch not far from our driveway. When we were building our home, we were back and forth all the time, and one night our daughter saw all these little eyes on the road, but when she got out of her car, she couldn't find anything. The next morning when she was coming out again, she stopped in the same area, and what does she find? A litter of kittens huddled in a box hidden behind a willow bush in the ditch. We took them back to our house, and kept Willow, but had to take the others to the shelter. People are so cruel, it was amazing these tiny little guys survived even one night, it was last October, really cold, and the coyote population here is high. To this day Willow is fascinated by boxes, he can't resist ever getting into one, and claiming it as his own! We always jokingly call him the strangest house warming gift we've ever gotten!
