Hi all, I know this is weird but my female cat has of late been spaying around the house as if she was a tom. She stands with her back to the furniture sticks her tail up in the air and quivers it. And on inspection the wet patch smells like urine. I've always thought that only toms spay. What is going on?
Has any one got any ideas what is happening?

Any changes in the house? New cat? Furniture re-arranged? New people? Anything that may stress the cat can produce this behaviour. For the record, any cat can spray, altered or unaltered and it is usually territorial or sex drive linked; the neutered outside toms spray when a stray wanders through and they never did the usual advertising spraying that intacts (both male and female) will do. If she is spayed, look to environment and other stress factors and if that produces nothing, vet time if nothing has changed - could be infection or stones in the bladder.

Contrary to popular belief - female cats can & do spray in a similar manner to males.

Is she spayed? If not - that could be a big part of the problem.

I suggest you take her to the vet to specifically have them test her urine to rule out a UTI (urinary tract infection). Many times a cat is going outside the box because they have a health issue, however in the case of actual spraying it's often behavioral.

Thanks guys for your answers. Yes, she is spayed and yes there are changes to our house hold. My son and his wife lost their home and moved in to ours temporary. The thing is they have a three year old son who finds great pleasure in shouting at the top of his voice, just for fun. As well as this, he hates to go to bed and kicks up a hell of a stink for a good hour before he finally gives in. So you guys may have hit the nail on the head. Thank you.

PS. they finally move in to a flat at the end of February so maybe all things will return to normal after then. I hope.

Those changes are more than enough for the poor girl to start marking - her whole quiet, orderly world has been turned upside down and then some. Do clean the spots with some kind of cleaner for pet spots and take some quiet time with her as the centre of attention each day. Is there any correlation between the shouting and crying spells to the spraying? Curiosity compells this question.
It may not hurt to have her checked out anyway.

Yeah, having had a 3 year old boy(who is now 8) , I know how they can be. That would most likely be the cause of her spraying. Her world has been flipped upside down and this is how she is reacting to the added stress. A Feliway diffuser(if available in the UK) would be a very good idea, not to mention a visit to the vet to rule out a stress induced UTI. Be sure to clean up any sprayed areas with an enzyme based cleaner and try to give her some quiet undivided attention; or even a child-free place that she can escape to if she finds it all to be too much and needs some alone time(if possible. I have to share a bedroom with my son so I understand not having room.)

I hope this helps you out some.
