Neko and Petey

Wow, lots of threads on kitten affection!! I guess i won't go there and expect it a little later Petey does come to me and will take a couple pets but he doesn't let us hold him. I can carry him over to something but no longer than 5-10sec. He'll bunny kick us and squirm until he's free!! I also think its interesting that he sleeps in the kitty beds all by himself. Neko never used them and prefered to lay on me. At night he sleeps at the foot of the bed but a few times now I've woken up at 4am with him sleeping on my stomach/chest. ( I must not move much in my sleep )
When i pet him he arches his back... is this normal? I wondered if he was hurting in this area but when he's laying down or napping, petting his back is no problem. He goes to Neko for some affection though, he loves when she grooms him We've only had him for 2 weeks!! I guess Neko took the mommy roll or something... but then here's my second concern/curiosity:

He's only 4 months, is it common for him to already take the alpha cat roll? A couple of times during some rough playing, Petey will get on his tip toes and Neko will lower herself to the ground!! She's 12lbs!! He plays with all her toys and she just watches. She doesn't even play with her own toys anymore. I also purchased a window perch and Petey already took it as his own! Neko won't even sit on it. She walks around it and sits on the narrow window sill. They play with eachother alot though, mostly chasing eachother and a little rough play. They nap together alot and as i've mentioned, she loves grooming him. She also lets him eat her leftovers as she never finishes her wet food. I've had to hold him back a couple times so she can finish eating as much as she wants.

I'm thinking that I want to seperate them for a little 15min break a day so I can play with Neko. When I try to bring out her favorite games, she shys away when Petey runs in for all the fun.

Sorry the post is so long!! Any thoughts? Normal behavior?
Thank you!

Petey's arching his back because he loves it and is trying to apply more scratching pressure by himself. It's the same as when he headbutts or rubs against you. If a cat doesn't want to be pet, he will slink low to the ground and do everything to avoid your hand. My kitten Tails also arches like crazy, especially when I'm scratching near his butt.

My 2 year old cat Memphis refused to play (with me) for over 6 weeks after I got my kitten Tails. He would be very submissive as well, letting Tails boss him around, steal his sleeping spots, and generally be a terror. I think adult cats know that kittens are spunky and just playing, and your Neko probably took on a mother roll the same way I know Memphis took on the roll of father (he also groomed Tails almost right away).

Seriously, your playtime woes are dead-on what I experienced. I was worried Memphis was never going to get interactive play because he wouldn't play with Tails around and would stand outside the door Tails was at when I locked Tails up. It did get better though, after a couple months, and now they both chase Da Bird around. You may want to try taking the feather off Da Bird if you have it, the sound of the metal clasp hitting walls/hardwood floors is what finally spurred Memphis into playing again, and with fervor.

It's amazing, both of your cats sound like dead ringers for my cats in terms of how they interact with each other and you.

I may have mis-worded it... He arches the opposite way, like a U. Like how you mentioned sinking lower to the ground and running away. This only when we pet his back... He's starting to do it less though
Thanks for all your info on similar experiences!
