Is this normal or has anyone experienced this?

Hi all,
A question about my Candy, she is 9 and has some issues that I don't really want to go into other than that she is a special needs cat who needs alot of love. Well for a long time she has been doing this and my daughter made a comment tonight is it normal? I always just presumed it was but maybe not? When she settles down she curls over and basically suckles herself., she really pads in with her paws like a kitten would on its mother. I know its probably just a comfort thing and it looks very, very cute but it does alarm me a bit, does anyone elses kitty do this? x

Tails does the same thing, and he's only 5 months old. I'll hear a loud slurping noise while he's cleaning himself, and when I look over he's sucked one of his nipples halfway down his throat (hyperbole). He suckles for 30 seconds or so, then goes about cleaning himself some more.

ok - so if it is not normal how would you go about stopping your cat doing it?

I say let the cat continue and dont worry about if it is normal or not - so long as the cat is not in danger of hurting herself there is no need to worry about it - oh and can we have a video please?

They make nipple guards for runners who chafe during long summer runs. Pop a few of those on lol

'm not really worried, it was just that Melissa asked and being a 9 year old I think she thought it was a bit odd, its so cute to watch, I shall video her next time she does it and post it.x

i've had a few cats do this too. I think its comforting to them and reminds them of their kittenhood when they would do it to their mamas.

Even though Candy is 9, she is as small as a 3 month old kitten, she is so petite and yeah I think its alot to do with her kittenhood, she was taken away from her mum at 5 weeks so she probably missed all of that. I was just really wondering if anyone elses kittys do this, she looks so cute.x

I've never had a cat do this, but since other cats here do it, I don't think it's something to worry to much over. If you are concerned, just bring it up to your vet next time you're there.

Neko does this!! I adopted her at 4months and the rescue group and vet said she would grow out of it.... 1yr later and continuing... she still does this Silly girl. When we pet her belly we can definitely feel the area she suckles She mostly does it when she wants to cuddle into a deep nap with her meowmy and at bedtime.

Here is a video of her, she started suckling and then when she realised I was looking at her she started washing herself, don't know if you can hear her purr as the tv's on but she always purrs so loudly when she does it, bless her.x

She is tiny and she's got such a cute face, just lately she's been so loving, she is a bit mad though at times, she just runs around chasing her tail and then in and out all of the rooms and you can hear when shes coming because she has a problem retracting her claws and they tap, tap on the laminate when she walks x
