Wasn't that the island that uses the cats as part of the tourist attraction but then neglects and even has people that poison them in the off season?

Possibly consider researching how the cats in the countries/cities are treated. It wouldn't be right that you choose somewhere for cats but have it turn out to a complete lie.

Oh ya, that rings a bell but I don't remember the details.
I was told by a Greek secretary, an older woman in her 60s, that Greek people like cats and have cats. Those were her words IIRC and they made me smile.
I also spoke to a young Turkish man in his early 20s who rescued kittens here in NYC-- but he never said anything about cats in Turkey.

In 1991, Italy made it illegal to kill homeless cats. Rome had a city-wide TNR program in place. This link takes you to information about the background of a shelter where there is actually a tour of historic cultural places where cats are also cared for and TNR'd, and proceeds from the tour go to benefit the shelter.

Egypt & Israel the plight of homeless cats is just horrible. Greece I think it depends very much where you are.

Japan. Many parks and temples have resident cats and colonies. You can even pick yourself up a J-bobtail!

The mura neko are sometimes loved and well-fed, but TNR has yet to make real inroads here outside The Cat Network which was started by forreigners, I believe.

I don't know which countries have more cats, but I just have to ask you about the reasoning behind asking this. I'm not saying anything bad, I'm curious because it's just a very odd question. If you're asking for yourself personally, it's very different criteria for a vacation destination than I have ever heard of.

My sister was just vacationing in Santorini, Greece and said that there were cats everywhere. She finds them cute from a distance but she needs time to warm up to all furry creatures - so she was not too comfortable. They had cats visiting their hotel room balcony and had them in the restaurants. My BIL loves cats and was petting them and having a great time, though.

I totally agree.

Sorry to say I am biased re: Europe because of the notorious cat fur trade (except in Italy).

Zanzibar in Tanzania has "a lot" of street cats. I was there last year and saw them frequently.

The idea of keeping a cat indoors and feeding him/her separate food is still a bit far fetched so the ones on the street are used to people and a lot of attention...they are the community's pets. The community likes cats as they keep pests away. You will see them wander through the streets, lay down on the side for a nap, wander in to a restaurant or store to get water or a treat or a chin scratch. There is a place called Forodhani park that is a huge attraction on the water, with lots of food and lots of cats walking around taking it all in too!

Aside from that, Zanzibar is an amazing experience! The island has a lot of attractions and is a great experience. I think mostly Europeans vacation there and I think it's a best kept secret...

ETA: i found a slide show of some cute kitties http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/5...lmCjvp?start=0

As far as cities go that I have visited, Athens, Istanbul, Cairo, Sarajevo and the whole island of Cyprus are full of street cats, some in good condition and others dreadfully neglected. But you find street colonies in almost any big town or city - parts of London and Paris and New York have many.

The most "street" cats we've ever seen were in Italy, but I haven't visited all the countries mentioned above.

You see, that's what is confusing me. Are you saying a top reason for going to a country is to see their version of alley cats? What do you do beyond just passing by and seeing them that makes cats on the street the highlight of a vacation?
