Water Dish and Litterbox Problems

Hi everyone!

My kitten, Jordan, is soon to be 8 months old and recently he has begun doing some "strange" things. First, Jordan has been taking his toys with him to the litterbox. He doesn't drop them into the box (at least not all the time), but he'll hold them in his mouth the entire time. After this he'll run out to his water dish, drop the toy in, and then leave the toy in his food dish. He only does this to certain toys.

Jordan has also been tipping his water bowl over. I think I may have solved that problem by purchasing a ceramic dish instead of the metal one he's had since coming home. But there's still some issues with him putting his paws into the dish and biting on the placemat and dragging the dishes until they spill.

I don't know what to make of his new behaviors! He's very well behaved kitty and I don't know if he's the only cat who does things like this. Has anyone else experienced a kitten/cat who likes to bring toys with him or her to the litterbox? Why would they want to have a toy with them? Is this like a person bringing a magazine with them to the bathroom?

Any advice or insight would be great!

Midnight does that! He used to bring a mr. ball (aluminum foil ball) to the box with him every time he went. He'd keep it in his mouth look at us, then hop into the box, turn around and look at us again. Then he'd do his business, and jump out with mr. ball in his mouth. This was back when the kittens were seperated. He doesn't really take mr. ball to the box with him anymore. Now instead of taking mr. ball to the box, he takes his sister Luna. Yes I'm aware my kittens are perverted.

Lynxx used to always leave his catnip toys in his water bowl. He'd play with the catnip for awhile then just drop it in his waterbowl, look at us and walk away. It was his way of saying he was done with the catnip toy. He only did that with his catnip toys, none of the others. So maybe after awhile the catnip toys lose their catnip scent?

Knocking over the water dish is also what Lynxx used to do. That was his way of telling us he wanted fresh food or water.

Many kittens go through this stage, you just have to hope they grow out of it. I still find the occasional soggy toy that someone had in the water dish (one of the other cats usually fishes them out).

Just put a tray or shallow storange container under the water dish to try to catch most of the water.

They do grow out of it?

For the most part. My three kittens (which are not really kittens anymore) finally did. Before, Blann had a habit of digging the water out like the OP's kitty does. I don't know who puts the toys in the water still as I never figured out which cat did it in the first place... Tomas still messes with the water from time to time, but he's still stuck at kitten mentality (into everything) at 4 1/2 years old.

Containing the mess and providing more interesting things to make a mess with is the only course of action.

My little one, she is 7 months old just started playing with the water dish, its one of those water deal things that you fill up and it lasts for a cpl of days, well she started to splash water allover the place and scoot the dish allover the house, I want to fix this problem asap
Any feedback would be appreciated

I give toys to about 3 dozen cats in cages at the shelter every week. (It's really funny because then the usually quiet cat rooms start filling up with the noise of their playing. And they mess up their cages. But they have fun, so it's worth it.) Some of them always put their toys in their water bowls.

I had one kitten in particular who was obsessed with water. As far as making a mess with the water bowl, I got a heavy dog dish ceramic bowl that he couldn't tip over (15 years later I still have it and it is my current cats' favorite water bowl). When I had this kitten, I could only put a small amount of water in the bowl, or he would splash it on the (wood) floor. Of course that meant filling the bowl often - about 2 times a day. At that time I started using plastic trays under the cat feeding/water stations. I have 5 of these now. I find them easy to clean up and move when I clean the floors. The latest ones I bought I got at Target, on sale, since Christmas. They came in black, white, and red. They are oversized and have handles holes, and high sides. So besides the water splashes they contain, they keep most of the kibble my cats manage to get out of their bowls off the floor - except for the kibble they pick up in their mouths and move away from the tray from to eat (and leave crumbs), or drop (sigh).

Oh, and kittens do seems to grow out of this playing with water stage.

I never had one who took a toy to the litter box. I think that's hilarious. But a lot of kittens do seem to think litter boxes are "sand boxes" like children play with.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my OP. I guess I can just hope that Jordan grows out of the water dish phase I did get a mat for underneath the dish, and a heavier water dish. This seems to be helping with him knocking it over. The toys still get in the dish on a daily basis, so I guess I'll just wait and see what happens
