need help with my urinating cat!

Thread Starter
my cat, jo, is a spayed female who is about 4 years old. she is an indoor/outdoor cat. a year ago she started peeing on anything like a bathmat or doormat. i was told it was because they can be damp and they like that. well, i took them all away and then she started peeing on anything remotely damp that is on the floor. i have made sure all is off the floor. now to my real problem. i have to leave her overnight and have a litter box for her. she continues to urinate outside of her litter box when i am not home (and she is locked in). i understand that she doesn't like me to leave, but i am becoming increasingly trapped because of her behavior. i don't want to leave the pet door open but i don't have much other choice. i love her but don't know what else to do? thanks for your help! also, hiring a pet sitter is very expensive.

Hi there! I'm glad you found our site!

Hopefully someone will come along with some advice, but I do remember reading about a cat doing that and it was because of the backing on the rug. Something about that plastic backing that keeps the rugs from skidding makes some cats want to pee on them. Maybe you could do a search on rugs or backing or something like that. I hope you get something figured out soon, I know how frustrating it can be!

Also, if I can help you with questions you have about our site, just ask. You can respond in this thread, or click on my name and send a PM.

Have you had her checked out by a vet? It's possible she has a UTI. First step- get her checked out by the vet. Also, how many litter boxes do you have? Only 1? Get another one. There is also a cat attract litter that you can buy. I've just been through something similar with my cat not peeing in the box. In the end she was put on medication which has helped tremendously. (behavioral issues were deemed to be her problem- there was nothing medically wrong).
