Do these funeral protesters do this just for attention?
Most people no matter their opinions have the common decency and respect for their fellow man.

AFAIK, its just that one church, and they go out of their way to kick people when they are down, and I'm amazed they have been able to get away with it for so long.

According to this article http://www.kgun9.com/Global/story.asp?S=13834933 , Westboro won't be there. Well, at least not at the funeral of Christina Green. A talk radio host cut a deal with them saying "Hey Westboro, if we agree to give you some airtime, will you please not show up at Christina Green's funeral?" Westboro took the deal.

All Wesboro cares about is publicity. Sometimes they don't even care about whose funeral they're at, and they are known to use high profile funerals to spread their hate.

Those lot at Westboro wouldn't know respect if it slapped them in the face

Yes.

However, the last I heard, they had backed off the threats to protest these funerals. In addition, another group has promised to shield the funerals, if the protesters do arrive.

Yes, they do it for the attention.

They are going to protest at the wrong funeral one day and end up dead themselves. I'm waiting for it to happen.

Or thrown into "the slammer"

[Arizona Governor Jan Brewer's emergency bill passed this week] creates a “protest free” zone around funerals. The bill was passed by an emergency session of the state Legislature.

Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, says church members will skip Thursday’s funeral of Christina Taylor Green. The group added that they will picket the funeral Friday for U.S. District Judge John Roll.

Also see this article on Yahoo which explains the misdemeanor status of funeral protesting.

Their lucky they were no where near my great grandmother's (if she were someone famous) funeral. I'm surprised they haven't protested the wrong funeral already.

They should invite the Patriot Riders in their area to get between the mourners and the protesters. They have never hurt a soul, but can scare the troublemakers right out their socks. They put a damper on protesters at military funerals.
