Kitty saw birds, another animal, or a person moving outside and was chattering at it. Chattering can mean they really want to go catch something (in the case of birds) or that they're just really excited (other animals). Unfortunately when some kitties get riled up they'll redirect their energy at an unlucky person messing with them or another animal member of the household that's too close.
Not all cats will do this, though, so you had no way of knowing she was going to do that to you. In the future, unless you know the cat well enough to know they don't redirect, leave them to stare out the window till they get bored.

I don't think the cat hated you. You said there was something outside that got the cat's attention. At that moment the cat was trying to focus only on what was outside. You continuing to pat the cat, was distracting the cat, that's probably why the cat bit you.

It was cat-language for "I'm busy, leave me alone." Nothing more or less. Sorry you got nipped though...I doubt it was personal.
