Matted fur, HELP!!

I have a himalayan kitten that has to be on Albon (liquid) and I tried to give her medicine in a syringe, BIG mistake. She spit it out and the rest ran down the sides of her mouth and it has set up like concrete under each side of her chin, in hard little mats. I tried to wash it out before it set, but it is like glue!!

I have read not to try and cut them out, I don't think I could anyway, it is so close to her skin. Is there anyway to get the mats out without having to take her to be shaved?

BTW--I learned she will take her medicine in her food, THANK GOD!!

you can put crisco shortening (lard) on it which will soften it down. Then use a seam ripper to take out the icky part, then comb her out. You have to let the lard sit on the fur at least 5-10 minutes

Thanks. O.k., gotta ask...what is a seam ripper? I think it's pretty safe to say I don't have one....since I don't know what that is. LOL!!! Is there something else I can use?

You can buy a seam ripper at any discount store such as target, walmart, etc. It is a sewing item, has a small hook on the end that removes thread from seam- hence its name seam ripper. You can also get it at fabric stores. They are great to take mats out of kitties without pulling the skin or cutting the kitty accidentally (like scissors tend to do) Whatever you do don't get it wet. Liquid will tighten it up and turn it into a nightmare.

Oh, thank you. I gave her a bath last night in an attempt to get it out. I know what you mean by making it tighter. I hope I haven't ruined my chances of getting it out by bathing her. I'm going to Walmart tomorrow. Thanks again.
