Griddle Question

I have a griddle I received as a Christmas present which I haven't used yet. I was going to make some French toast when I got home from school but the griddle instructions said to put a light coat of vegetable oil on the surface before preheating the griddle. The problem is that I don't have any vegetable oil. Would a light brushing of butter do the trick?

Thanks.

Nope, butter will burn and make things taste funky. I take it this is a cast iron griddle? If so, something tasteless like canola oil is best - coat, heat to smoking, wipe, repeat and it should be fine. The old way of seasoning cast iron is to coat liberally with oil, and pop into 400° oven for enough time for it to smoke and stink up the house. You also never EVER wash cast iron - just wipe with paper towels because every wash with soap takes away the seasoning

I had a roommate in college who always washed my cast iron skillets and left them in the rack to rust.

Thanks.

I'll pick some oil up tomorrow, I don't feel like going back out.

I had some oil but it's past the expiration date. Six years past the date. That's how often I use the stuff.

It's one of those non-stick griddles. It feels like the same surface as the skillets.

I would give it a try. Part of cooking is experimenting and see what works!! If its non-stick, you should be fine if the heat isn't set to high.

How are you going to make your french toast?

Also, if you just plan to use oil for your non-stick griddle, you won't need much, so you might want to just get some cooking spray. Either way would work. Enjoy!!

If it's non-stick you shouldn't have to use anything on it. Don't know why the directions say to use oil, unless it's to make the food a little crunchier. You could go ahead and try it without the oil. If you don't like how it comes out, then get some for the next time.

What kind of griddle is it. My waffle maker opens up and makes a griddle. It has a nonstick surface and the instructions said coat it with oil before using it. I ruined a George Foreman grill one time by using the spray on it. But if it doubt, follow the instructions that came with it. I wouldn't use spray or butter.

I don't add cinnamon or anything like that to my french toast. I just beat some eggs with a bit of milk, dip the bread in, the put them on the griddle. I like butter and syrup with it.

Here's my griddle:

If you have shortening (Crisco) on hand, you could put some on a paper towel and use that to grease your griddle. That wouldn't hurt your griddle at all. I use shortening to season cast iron.

Add a bit of vanilla to the milk/egg mixture-much more tasty.
You can add butter to the pan, not very much less than 1/2 T. Butter has a low smoking point so the temperature cannot be to high or high for a very short time.

If you have cooking spray (like Pam) you can do that and wipe it into the griddle, but do NOT use butter.

Cooking spray can really mess up the non-stick surface.

Gotta get my eyes checked. I thought the title of this thread was "Girdle Questions".

Im sure oil can help you with your girdle, too.

I picked up some veggie oil on my home from work this morning.

I'm a happy fat guy, I just finished eating my french toast.

I am glad you waited and followed the instructions. Congrats on the french toast. I was wanting some of that yesterday.
