I always advise people to give hair ball remedy on an empty stomach at least an hour before a meal. I generally make the cats wait 2 hours after dosing.
yes.. I prefer and have found all oil ones that work and do not have the digestion issue... 2 hours is good IMHO .. Also petroleum can have residual crude
, but sometimes you need it

I usually give it 3-4 hours after a meal and when there won't be another one for another 4 hours (like early morning).
None of the hair ball remedies I have in the house say anything about when to give it, in relation to meals or empty stomach. Just directions on how much and how often.

I have petromalt, cat lax, and two brands of laxatone.

I don't mean an hour after a meal. I advise: dose on an empty stomach (such as first thing in the morning) at least an hour before a meal. But my cats wait two hours.

Sorry for the hi-jack LDG.

Neither did I. It must have been on some that I've gotten from the vet before - I know I've seen 2-3 tubes that had the dosing instructions as at least 2 hours before or after any meal.

No worries on the hi-jack, it was interesting and relevent.

So how do people that free feed give hairball remedy?
We don't free feed anymore but...

Anyway, he threw up some digested food last night (it was up in the cabinet so I didn't find it until this morning - I just did a quick floor search when I got up to give him a small snack at 6:00am).

And then when I got up to give them their regular meal (I was trying to sleep in today) at 8:30, when cleaning the boxes I found partially digested food - the food I gave him at 6:00am with the throw up IN the litter box. He must have been going to the bathroom.

The vet said that vomiting while straining is not abnormal if they're consitpated. She wanted me to give him colace to get him moving - but I know for sure he pooped that poop we saw in the x-ray.

Now I wonder if he needs a stool softener.

Just keeping myself posted for future reference.

No vomit last night or today. Still on 1/4 75mg zantac at 10:30am and 10:30pm.

Well Lazlo threw up a small amount of digested food last night - it had a few clumps of hair in it.

I fed everyone here the Temptations Hairball Control treats yesterday (instructions are very specific - 10 treats all at once, no more no less, not more than every other day), and someone tossed their cookies within an hour or two of getting them. I didn't notice any hair in the throwup...only gave them these treats because I noticed everyone has been doing alot of grooming lately. Not that this has much to do with this thread, just mentioned it
(Hey, I'm extra tired from hospital visitation with my mother overload!)

Hope this situation with Lazlo gets resolve soon, poor baby!

My cat Memphis is allergic to Temptations treats, and would throw them up every time within a couple hours. Maybe whatever it is in them that causes a high number of allergies (from what I've read about/seen) is even more concentrated in the hairball formula? Also, the number of recommended treats is usually ridiculous. The dental greenies I switched to recommended 8-10 for 12lb Memphis, TWICE a day. i poured out 20 treats, it's almost an entire food bowl-full.

Lazlo, hope the fur was the culprit this time.

Thanks, Otto, me too.

And thank you ALL for the vibes.
I'm really not sure what we're going to do here other than give it a few more days.

None of our cats would ever eat temptations treats - and I totally agree with complete "wonderment" (is that a word?
) at the recommended amounts. When the cats went on the prescription diet, we stopped giving them treats. They were so picky there weren't many they'd eat anyway.

I normally only feed 4 Temptations per session (twice a day) unless it's the Hairball Control ones. But the Greenies are so huge and dense, yes, they would fill up an entire bowl if you fed 20 of them!

Poor guy, if it's not one end, it's the other, huh? Well, at least he's not constipated now. Maybe the diarrhea is actually a result from being backed up, and now things will settle down.

Just keeping myself posted here.... no vomiting last night. (
).

Gave him a hairball treatment today. He's still on the zantac.

Knock wood - I think the vet might have been right about suspecting a gastroenteritis cycle from the hairballs.
I also think it could partially be from moving to the all wet diet, even though it's the same food and he had two small meals of wet food a day before, he doesn't get the dry anymore.

I hope that everything has settled down with your furbaby. I know what it's like to not know why your furry one is throwing up. Had the same issue with Smokie. I had to kind of figure it out myself because I didn't have money to continue bringing him to the vet. His issue was the dry. Apparently as they age some cats just can not digest the dry food. The vet compared it to when she was young she could eat just about anything, but if she tried to eat the junk she ate as a kid she'd be sick too. So right now I have him on 1 can of wet a day along with dry the rest of the day. So far so good no throwing up for a while.

So I know what it's like and how frustrating it can be. So I'm sending lots of
and lots of to you that your furbaby will continue to get better!

Well, the diarrhea seems to have been a one time thing.

But he did hork up a rather large hairball last night. How is he eating SO MUCH hair? I now brush him daily with the furminator. Between that and him, how is he not bald?
