The called for a lot of snow on Friday so they salted all the roads all day Thursday to prepare.... and then Friday's snow turned in to rain... BYE SALT!
So when we got a couple of inches dumped on us last night, it made for a not so fun commute this morning!
Luckily I didnt have to work so I rode to Chattanooga with Gary. As soon as we got to the west side of Knoxville the roads improved and Chattanooga didnt have any snow at all! It actually ended up being a fairly nice day down there to walk around! Just a bit nippy!
But anyways we got up and said oh well our road is bad, but surely thats it! We just gotta get down to the main roads!
But here is what it looked like when we left!

This is a main road! This road is usually always clear!

this is I-75! The interstate should not look this bad!
I75, I640, and I40 were all a bit sketchy and we did slide a bit. But so far we are loving the new subie for snow!

Sweetie, that is my normal commute in NE Ohio. I know southern regions are not that well prepared for snow. I hate driving in it no matter where the region. Glad you are all ok.

The weather report for here today was quite amusing. We are under a lake effect snow warning. Right now, there is not a cloud in the sky and the moon and Orion is out. We are supposed to get anything from 1/4" to 12' by tomorrow morning. Yes, a dusting to a foot.

LOL, I haven't seen a road surface for a couple months! Snowpack is the usual state of roads in the winter, except for the interstate (after a few days, all the snow is gone from them. . .must be all the trucks).

If they put salt down around here, the deer come out to lick the roads and there are a lot of accidents (and dead deer to pick up). So not a lot of salting going on. Only when there's a really bad ice storm.

at least your areas are prepared for it! We are not! Actually the area is already having a salt shortage so they have stopped salting "unnecessary" roads.
I just know I am damned ready to summer!

In Chicago we call that clear sailing! Although, honestly, I'd rather see a little snow than black ice. But, even here the first snow always poses challenges, and it's never fun to drive in. Take care of yourselves, and remember that no vehicle is perfect in snow or ice - especially on turns and when braking.

Wonder why they don't use sand of short of salt. Last year the salt was running low so they mixed small stones with the salt. That was messy.....

They did that last year when they started getting low on salt... And then they ran out of that too. The bad thing about knoxville is more than half of my commute to work is over bridges and they are always slick! Not fun at all!
The past two winters have been bad! It's odd!
Oh and right after Christmas (the last bad snow we had here) they had a report from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge that there were people stuck in the mountain cabins for over a week because both the counties snowplows broke down and they were trying to get them put. Plus there were all the angry customers that were scheduled to check into those cabins and couldn't get there! It was not fun!

I don't know what type of vehicle you drive but for the truck we carry about 200 pounds of weight in the back of the box. For cars you can carry about 80 pounds of weight (cat litter is good, you can use it if you get stuck.) This can help with traction.
Up north many people carry winter survival gear in case there is an emergency. I carry a bag with extra, gloves/hat/boots. A blanket, some water (even with low temps it hasn't frozen) and some snacks. Never had to use but its in the vehicle until spring!

I don't drive if it is like that. I don't do well in snow. Plus the other people scare me. If it's bad we now take Garys Subaru 2.5 rs impreza. We also have a truck if we need it, and my car has at least 80lbs of stereo equipment in the trunk so it goes okay in the snow. But like u said , I do not unless I do not have a choice at all!!

Funny thing, shortly after I posted, someone hit an electrical pole and we had no electric. It never ceases to amaze me that some drive normally on icy roads.
