Mom receives a box of food once a month and there's usually a bag or two of dried beans. She asked me yesterday if I wanted them as she doesn't bother with soaking beans or anything anymore.

Do I want them? Oh my, yes! My sister brought them over this afternoon. With a request from my BIL for me to please make some baked beans ASAP. So tomorrow, we're having a winter picnic with grilled burgers, pasta salad, and baked beans. And I'm thinking a shoo-fly cake for dessert. And if I had some of Erica's lovely lemons and oranges, I could make orange lemonade to go with!
My sister and BIL were only too happy to be invited.

Anyway, in our pantry closet.....

1-pound bag of pinto beans (yay, pinto beans!)
1-pound bag of navy beans (ham and bean soup anybody?)
1-pound bag of black-eyed peas
1-pound bag of green split peas
1-pound bag of yellow peas

A 2-pound bag of great northern beans are soaking in the fridge now for baked beans tomorrow.

It just so happens that I have a nice ham bone in the freezer, just waiting to be thawed to make a large pot of split pea soup, so the green split peas and the yellow peas will be used quickly.

To me, it's a bonanza! I love cooking with beans!

But if you take Beano before, there'll Beano gas!!

Here's a good recipe for Baked Beans. They're made with bacon, but you could omit, if you wanted to.

OVEN BAKED BEANS\t\t\t

2 lbs. great northern flat dried beans, washed and sorted\t
1/2 c. packed brown sugar\t\t\t
2 tsp. salt\t\t\t\t\t
1 tsp. prepared mustard\t\t\t
2 c. ketchup
2 Tbsp. corn syrup
1 lb. bacon, browned and drained
1 large onion, chopped

Place beans in Dutch oven. Cover with cold water. Place in refrigerator overnight. When ready to cook, bring the water to a boil, then cook until soft. Drain the beans, but keep the water....you'll need to add water to the beans as they cook in the oven. Crumble bacon and add to beans along with remaining ingredients. Bake in 300° oven for 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Add water as necessary while baking.

Note: I often add 1-2 tablespoons prepared horseradish to the beans. If you don't want to soak your beans overnight: Place them in the Dutch oven, cover them with cold water. Cover with lid and bring to a boil, then turn the burner off. Let the beans stand, covered with the lid, for one hour. Then cook until soft.

So glad you have so many and many ideas.
This household loves beans too. We soak and eat them weekly. Great in soups, burritos, salads, so many things. Great protein. Black beans from WF bulk bin are my favorite.

Soaking them for a long time helps.

Oooh I'm jealous of the beans! I love making split pea soup. I wish we could share ingredients, I'd gladly trade some citrus for some extra dried beans!

Enjoy!
