Pain meds after spay?

My 7 month old kitten Lola was spayed today. I brought her home expecting her to be tired and groggy but she is running around like nothing happened. The vet gave me some take home pain meds (Tramadol). I am wondering if it might be better to skip the meds so she doesn't over exert herself? I don't want her to be in terrible pain but I also don't want her running and jumping and tearing out her stitches.

Also any advice on how to keep her from licking the incision site? I got her a cone but she freaks out with it on and rolls around on the ground until she is able to pull it off her head.

My girls never needed pain meds. When they got home I placed them in their carrier/cage where they slept for almost a whole day. I kept them an extra day or two and then it was back to normal. Except for one case (stitches were done badly), the girls never touched them.

Pain meds usually also sort of knock out the cat/human (think about what vicodin does to humans). I don't think you'll notice more running around with the pain meds. Really, it's best to just watch out for big jumps. My kitten ran around just fine after his neuter, but I made sure to intervene when I saw him prepare to jump on something tall, or when he was going to jump directly from my bed to the floor.

So if you do notice her in pain at all, give her the meds without worrying about making her more rambunctious. If she's in pain, that might not let her rest comfortably and pain meds could help.

Luna came home with pain meds and an antibiotic. She was in pain so she needed it. It took awhile for her to recover. We didn't get a cone with her, she didn't need it. Right now Midnight has a cone on, to keep him from lapping his paw that has an infection. He doesn't like it, but he's not rolling around on the floor trying to get it off. But he's on a pain med, that seems to keep him to groggy for rolling around like that.

My cats always got a pain shot prior to leaving the vet and then no meds sent home. Also, no cone. I'd let her go without the cone unless she starts licking the incision. Just keep an eye on her!

She is being extremely difficult. I can't keep her still. She will not wear her cone and she refuses her pain meds. Her meds are in pill form and the vet tech told me just to open her mouth and pop it down her throat, easy as pie.... Lola isn't having any of that. She just spits it back out and I have to chase her and hold her down to even attempt to put it in her mouth. I might try covering it in cheese wiz.

I have her isolated from the other cats in my bedroom. I took out all her climbing toys so she wouldn't have anything to jump on but now she thinks its a good idea to jump up and down off the dresser... I don't have another room to keep her locked up in so I am not sure what to do about her jumping... She also managed to pry the door open this morning and bolted down the stairs for breakfast with her brothers in the kitchen... she is driving me crazy.

She has to be in pain... she just had her stomach cut open and her uterus and ovaries removed... yet she is acting like nothing happened.

From the way you describe her behavior, I don't think she's in any pain. She would not be tearing around your house like a holy terror so quickly if she had pain when she moved.

You can't keep a kitten from running and jumping. I didn't even bother to try with Attitude(the vet knew this when they called the next day and I said there was no slowing her down), I knew she'd slow down if she was hurting. She did need her pain meds for the 3 days after her spay, you could tell she was sore. The pain meds helped her sleep just like heavy duty pain meds do to us.

I already knew she wouldn't go for the collar(she made it less than 12 hours when she had a corneal ulcer when she was about 10 weeks old) so I didn't even try. She left it alone anyways. She was never big o0n bothering things on her that she wasn't supossed to. She left her eye alone and she also left her stitches alone after her spay. I don't think Attitude even realized she was sliced open, she sure didn't act like it.

Nuts was around 12- 13 months old when he was neutered and he took it slow and walked around stiff legged for a couple days(no pain meds) and he was fine.

They usually have something for pain that covers that whole day.
The next morning is usually when you start meds.
The meds usually have added benefits like helping inflammation.

With my first group of cats, the vet never mentioned pain meds as an option. Some of them breezed it, but my poor baby Garfield vomited more than I thought a cat could hold and was miserable. Now I guess times have changed, and I always get the meds. Speck acted like nothing had happened after his neuter, but I gave him the meds anyway because he was playing so much I was afraid he'd hurt himself. Poor Daisy, I know she was in pain after her spay, but she was so wild and hostile that there was no way we could have medicated her. I still feel guilty about that.

Sounds like she's doing fine and really doesn't need the pain meds. Keep an eye on her incision and if you notice it getting extremely red (angry looking), swollen, oozing liquid, or if she continues to lick it, then worry about it. If she's licking and pulling out stitches, then you can use a man's tube sock, cut the foot part off and keep the top that's stretchy. Work the top of the sock either over her back legs/tail or over her head and front legs and situate it around her midsection. If she's too big for a sock, use a baby onesie.
