acute diarrhea

What do you usually do when your cat has acute diarrhea.
My cat has been having watery stool for the last 17 hours.
He keeps running to litter box every time he eats his kibbles.
Should I take away his food?
Would he get better on his own?
He has no other signs of illness and is active and alert.
I am kinda worried. How will an irritated bowl heal on its own??

I would suggest a vet visit

Could kitty have eaten something bad ( trash, bug , posion)?

My vet often suggest a 12 hour fast

I gave him raw chicken (first time ) and added a bit of taurine powder in can.
After that, he started having diarrhea....

If I withhold food for 12 hours, would he be hungry? He really likes eating...

what is the kibble he is eating, does it have chicken in it?

Do you regularly give raw chicken?

He'll be just as hungry if you give him food as if you withheld it. Diarrhea means all nutrients are passing too quickly through his system to get absorbed, which will make him hungry. He needs access to water if he has diarrhea since he will be more dehydrated than normal.

And sharky, OP said they fed raw chicken for the first time and the cat got diarrhea, which was 17 hours ago.

Thank you

I would call the vet... the chicken may have had something that does not agree with kitty

Yes, that was the first time I introduced raw chicken to his diet. He normally has royal canin, blue buffalo and different kinds of can food or boiled chicken/beef.

Will his bowl heal on its own? Do you think it was irritated by some bacteria? He doesn't vomit, but he just has to go to litter box everytime he eats his kibble.
Frequent loose stool means he has no obstruction right? He already went 5 or 6 times....
Does the food he eats right now come out as loose stool just in 5 or 10 minutes?

Will his bowl heal on its own? possibly, but cats can get dehydrated very fast, it is safer to take him to the vet and get this taken care of... Do you think it was irritated by some bacteria? could be... But sometimes cats are ok with cooked meat, and not raw, and vice versa... This could just mean he has a problem with the raw chicke - it happens. He doesn't vomit, but he just has to go to litter box everytime he eats his kibble.
Frequent loose stool means he has no obstruction right? not necessarily, obstruction also causes diarrhea, although it more often than not also causes projectile vomit with it as well He already went 5 or 6 times....
Does the food he eats right now come out as loose stool just in 5 or 10 minutes? If you had IBD, you would understand what the food is doing... It is not that the food he is eating is going through the digestive tract in 5-10 minutes... What happens is that the digestive tract, all the way from his stomach to his intestines are so irritated that once he ingests food, a chain reaction occurs and all the muscles in the tract starts contracting causing him to expel the food and water that is already inside of his intestines. This gives the impression the the food is going right through it, but it is not really, it is the food he is eating causing a reaction to defecate the food that is already there through massive intestinal cramping.

Occasionally even a animal with loose stools can in fact have an obstruction, normally though they also have vomiting...

No the food you are feeding is not coming out that quickly

He may heal but as Both Carolina and I have noted he likely needs a vet visit..This is a painful issue

I took him to the vet. The vet said his intestine was scratched and gave me medicine. I gave my cat medicine, but he threw up everything 2 minutes after taking medicine and went to litter to have more watery stool. He then hid in blanket and didn't want to eat anything. His has nothing in his stomach that his stool is just some whitish mucous that looks like the medicine he took...
How do I give medicine if he would throw up and feel sick???
Does anyone have any experience in thiss???

Please call the vet... maybe kitty needs a different med or a pill vs liquid
post #14 of 15
can you give more specifics? what did the vet give him? If this cat is throwing up and having diarrhea constantly like this, I would consider taking him to the ER. Sorry, but at this point I would not risk it.

Thanks everyone for the advice. My cat's diarrhea has stopped. But he hasn't pooped for 3 days (I only gave him rice and chicken). Is that normal?
