Help! 4 month old neutered male keeps peeing on my bed!

Hello! In October of last year, our precious Little Robby slipped out the front door and was hit by a car. We had adopted him from the pound to prevent him from being euthanized. So, we went back to the pound and adopted a pair of kittens in his honor. (NOT to replace him, it would be impossible to replace that cat)

They are brother and sister, and we named them Buddy and Holly. The pound said that they were 8 weeks old. We took them to the vet, and he said that they were five weeks old. They were teeny tiny! A few times, I noticed that one of them had urinated on the bed. I thought that it was Buddy, because he had previously been sleeping in the spot where the urine was and Holly likes to sleep at the foot of the bed, not up with us. It happened maybe 3 or 4 times, and each time we washed the blankets and sheets and cleaned the mattress. We keep their litter box very clean, cleaning it out at least once a day. It is in our bathroom, in our room, so we clean it out frequently not only for the cats' sake, but for our own!

In early December, I went out of town for two weeks. DF said that he thought that Buddy had started spraying. They were about 3 months old. I thought that it seemed a bit early for that... I had an appointment to get them spayed and neutered in the end of December. I guess he did it a few times, and then that was that, he stopped. We (well he, at my direction) actually took the very expensive down comforter off of the bed and hoped that that would stop it.

He did stop, until this morning. He peed (not a lot) in two small places right behind my back, on the edge of the bed. I saw him scratching, like how they do in the litter box, on the edge of the bed afterwards and put him in the litter box. This is getting ridiculous! We cleaned their box yesterday afternoon! I feel like he is too young to be "spraying" but what else could it be? Can someone please help me?

It's probably not spraying, not if he's trying to bury it. Cats are quite proud of their spraying and wouldn't want to cover it up! He may have a urinary tract infection. I'd have him checked by the vet and see if anything is going on there.

Another thing is that it's best to have more litterboxes. The recommended number is one per cat plus one extra, in different locations around the house. Some cats don't like to share, and some don't like to pee and poop in the same box. So adding at least one more box may help, if it's not a urinary tract problem.

Hi there! I'm glad you found our site!

I like the idea of getting him to the vet...males have a smaller urinary tract system and tend to get infections/crystals more easily, I think.

Also, you can clean the spots where he went, but it has to be with an enzyme cleaner that "eats" the biological parts or the urine, otherwise he will still be able to smell it, even if you can't.

Well, if I can help you with questions you have about our site, just ask. You can respond in this thread, or click on my name and send a PM.

I second the enzyme cleaner idea, get "Nature's Miracle" or something similar. a vet check for a UTI is also a good idea. but it seems unusual for such a young cat. it's possible he just 'forgets' where to go so if you can make sure the odor is out of the sheets/mattress, it will help set him straight.

What kind of litter are you using (regular clay based, wood based, crystals)? It might be that he just doesn't like the one you have at the moment. I'd suggest that if/when you get another litterbox, put something different in it and see which one he prefers.
