Howling at the moon?

Genever started something new after we moved from the apartment to the house in August. It doesn't happen every night, but it's more often than not. Usually it's right after we turn all the lights off and go to bed. Other times it's in the middle of the night as well.

She meows this really loud, mournful, howling meow! Is she lonely because we went to bed? Is she talking to Mrs Green? (she's the former owner who died in the house in November 2009- she was in her 90's, with her 6 kids with her, so it was a peaceful passing. They bought the house new in 1947, so we're only the 2nd owners!)

She never did this in the apartment, and it's only ever at night when we're in bed with all the lights off. Sometimes if I calmly call her name when she's meowing, she will stop, but not usually. Sometimes I get up and go to the living room and call her and she comes running (it's dark so I don't know where she's coming from). Sometimes she'll be playing with a ping pong ball, running all over the place, and suddenly stop and start howling.

It's a mystery to me, and the G-cat is pretty normal otherwise. It just sounds so sad though! Any thoughts or ideas?

I have no idea why your cat might be doing this, but I just posted about almost the exact same thing! It does sound a bit sad, but my cat is always playing with balls so I don't think he is sad?

Can't wait to see what others think!

How old is she? Night-time vocalizing can be a symptom of hyperthyroid, which is usually an older-kitty issue. Of course, I kept taking my cat in and her thyroid was fine. Just her voice apparently needed exercising!!!

I posted about BooBoo's howling in the other thread.

But Hydrox, the Old Coot started howling at night. And we think he felt lost or something. If Hydrox was sleeping on the couch and we'd go to bed, when he awakened, it was almost like he didn't know where he was. He'd start howling....the me-ow-ow-ow-ow! kind of thing. I'd call him...."Pudder! We're in bed! C'mon back!" And pretty soon, he jump into bed and then he was fine.

And we've taken notice that, now that BooBoo is older, he'll do the same thing that Hydrox did. If he falls asleep on the couch and we go to bed, he'll wake up and start howling. I'll call him back and he'll stroll back the hallway, jump up in bed, and go back to sleep.

G-Cat isn't that old, though. But maybe sometimes she feels a little lonely or unsure in your new house b/c she was used to the apartment?

Yeah, I just don't know. She could feel lost, I guess. But she is often up when we go to bed, so it's not like a surprise that we're not awake anymore and it's dark. And she does usually come to bed and get under the covers (always on my side, never BF's for some reason ), but that's not until later on and she wakes me up. When I call her from the bed when she howls, she won't come in.

Silly G-cat. I wish I knew what went on in her mind..
