Hi,

My cat's bowel movements seem very loose, not to mention an increased quantity, since being on prednisone and penicillin injections. Has anyone else found this side effect from the use of these medicines?

Thanks.

Diarrhea is a known side effect of antibiotics (for all species). They aren't selective and will kill all bacteria, good and bad. Since the good bacteria are responsible for helping you to digest your food, you have digestive trouble while taking antibiotics. Giving probiotics after your cat is done with the penicillin can get things back to normal.

This is a common reaction - I always get an upset stomach on antibiotics. But Prednisone doesn not do it to my knowledge. My Wellington has been taking pred for years, on and off, for asthma, and has never had problems. THe long term effects of pred are far worse - diabetes and heart problems being two of the most common. But for somne cats it is a choice between quality and quantity of life as it is the only treatment offered for serious asthma.
