Do your cats whisper?

Nora is a loud mouth and anything that comes out of her mouth is full blast. lol Walter and Thomas on the other hand...they can both talk loud and normally (be here at meal time, HOLY MOLY!!), but sometimes, especially when they are on your lap or something (like just now I was loading the washing machine and Thomas was standing on it next to me), they open their mouths but nothing comes out. Not just once, either, they will keep doing it like they are having a conversation with you, but no sound ever comes out, just like a whisper noise. Kind of hard to describe. I've never come across or heard such a thing. It's weird, to be honest, but kind of cute. Do any of your cats do this??

No, and I wish they did....especially when they want breakfast at 5:00 in the morning!

Mollipop will mutter to herself while she's playing with her meeces.

There were a few times that Lynxx's mouth opened and he didn't meow, or make any sound, just closed it again, and no he wasn't yawning. Kinda like when a person opens their mouth to say something and forgets, can't remembers and just closes their mouth.

Kuura does that sometimes when he seems to be happy. I call it 'the silent meow'.

My Brillo does "silent meows" quite often. We think it's just the cutest thing in the world. Enjoy!

Autumn never whispers, she is quite vocal and can be downright loud at times. I recently realized she knows the command to sit. When I'm on the couch she steps all over my legs till she makes up her mind what she is going to do, sit or jump. This is painful on my legs so I just said 'sit' and she did immediately.

That's how they are! They either do the silent meow (which they do quite often) or they have little squeaky meows. LOL I've heard them do a full out meow a few times, but they don't do it very often.

Jack sometimes does what i call a lazy meow because it's just air that comes out, and Rosie sometimes does a faint cackle. But as soon as i ask if they want dinner or treats their loud!!!

Ming Loy does the silent meow.

There's an article on it in the Cat Behavior (non-forum) section: http://www.thecatsite.com/Behavior/2...lent-Meow.html

Thanks for the article! I had no idea there was a name for what they are doing. Thomas has become very attached to me, and he's the one that does it the most...usually when he's talking to me.

Merlin does the silent meow a lot, especially when I'm fixing his food and he's dancing around my feet. I have to look down at him to see that he's actually talking to me.

I have one talker, you'd swear I had a Siamese in the house with Baby, my conversationalist.
Spaz only speak when needed IE: food is involved, loud yowling, silent mews, and screaming directly into her food.
Jade talks occasionally, but she has what I call a kitty speech impediment.
All she does is tiny squeaks, I've owned mice that were louder.

Shadey is really the only one who opens his mouth to meow but nothing comes out. For the longest time I didn't think he COULD really meow, but boy does he disprove that theory when we have to take him anywhere in the car. He finds his voice then.
