Just brought my babies home!!

Hi, I'm new here.

i just brought my new kitties home!! They are brother and sister. The male is named Charlie and he is a black shaded persian, and the girl, Lola is a flame point himialayan. Welcoming them (we hope) is their big sis, Azrael, a 4 year old seal point himalayan.

They are still in their "safe room", (which is my closet in my bedroom.) They have been home three days now. I put them in their carrier and placed them in the middle of the living room so Azrael could smell them. She hissed and swatted at the carrier and then sat in the corner and watched them.

How long should I leave them in the "safe room"?

Thanks!!

Carrie

Hi Carrie! Welcome to TCS! You may want to slowly introduce them to other parts of the house without Azrael around. I assume the bedroom isn't their safe room because that's part of Azrael's territory? You may want to close her out, and let them play - get their scent around, so she .... gets used to it.

If you aren't already using Feliway, you may want to get that going.

In the meantime, I'd work on scent swapping. Rub the two new kitties all over with several cloths. Rub Azrael all over with several. Put one of the new cats' scented cloth under Azrael's food dish, and vice-versa. When you play with Azrael, put treats down for her after the play session on the new kitty-scented cloth. Get them associating each other with good things.

When you set their carrier in the room, give her treats, play with her - distract her. Make her think having them around means a total party - that she gets MORE attention, that she gets more play, and more love, more brushes - whatever are her biggest motivations.

How long the introductions will take are up to you - your sense of how Azrael is reacting, really.

If we had to wait until one of our hissy females stopped hissing and swatting, new kitties would be in their safe room for 6 months.

I'd give the scent mixing/swapping a few more days, and then maybe a supervised intro with just one of the newbies in Azrael's territory - the living room or something. But don't make the focus their "meeting," again, play it "casual" with that, and focus on doing something that makes Azrael happy while the kitty explores.

With the ideas of how to go about it now in hand, trust your instincts, and play it by ear.

Congratulations on the new additions!

I finally let them explore the living room last night as Azrael was eating in the bathroom. I just closed the door so she wouldn't think I was locking her up. I have never had new kittens and didn't know how fun they are! We have a long hallway that comes off the living room and Charlie would start at the end and run breakneck speed down the hallway and pounce on Lola and then they would switch and Lola would run and pounce on Charlie.

They are better than TV!!

I also put Soft Paws on them today and they look so cute with their manicures. I thought it would be harder than it was. I wrapped them up like burritos in a blanket and Charlie purred the whole time I was putting them on!! Lola was the difficult one. She squirmed and meowed the whole time, but I did get them on her front paws eventually. Now we shall see how long they last. It's been over an hour now and they don't seem to notice they have had their nails done.

Thanks so much for welcoming me and I will post pics soon!!

OMG! They are just precious! Kittens are way more entertaining than TV ! I hope everyone gets along soon. With Azrael being older you will have to watch her closely since they are so small when you do decide to let them out together. Kittens are kittens and they think everyone wants to play and she might not see it that way but she's still pretty young herself. I hope it all goes well!

Thank you. Things are going really well!! They have been out now for about a week. We have had very few spats, mainly over food. Azrael mostly sits and watches them, but last night, as the kittens were running up and down the hall, Azrael tried to run with them, only she isn't as fast and ran a few times and plopped down in the floor, like "I'm too old for this", LOL.

I am really proud of Azrael for being so patient with them so far. I even had all three of them in bed last night with me as I watched a movie. It was so sweet to have all of them relaxing and purring at the same time. It made me so happy. They are such a joy to have around.

Hi again, I just took my babies to get spayed and neutered. So I dropped them off today to come back and find out that my sweet little girl, Lola is really a sweet little BOY!!! AHAHA!! I am in shock!! "She" is just too pretty to be a boy..LOL. The vet's office all got a kick out of it. So..now I am on the hunt for another name for "Lola."

What goes good with Charlie?

Whoa! The breeder didn't know the sex of the babies?
As far as what goes with Charlie, Angel? Like Charlie's Angels?
Charlize...
Vibes for a speedy recover!

OMG that must have been a shock! We couldn't tell what Midnight was right away, because he was so little. But I really wanted him to be a boy, I knew he was going to be a boy. At least with him Midnight can be a male or female name. You really can't keep calling him Lola. I mean you could if you wanted to, but...

Does he answer to Lola? I don't know how hard it would be to rename him if he already knows his name.

Or so it's not so different you could call him Lolo? or Lo

I feel kinda stupid for not knowing "she" was a "he", but "lola" didn't have testicles when he came home. I checked. The vet also missed it too...they were checked when they first came home. They have been home for exactly a month today. But I don't think they know their names...they certainly don't seem like they do..LOL. I was kinda going for combo names..since they are littermates. I was thinking Charlie and Linus off of Peanuts. Or while I am renaming one...might as well change them both. Smokey for the black one and Bandit for the white one...this is my husband's pick...decisions..decisions.

Also how frisky are they supposed to be? When my Azrael was spayed she was really groggy for about a day and it took about a week for her to be herself again. I prepared their old safe room up again so they would have a quiet safe place to stay as they recover. They slept on the ride home and I took them in the room, opened the door to their carrier and BAM!! Out they went running around and playing!! That's another shocker!! I expected sleepy kittens and they are acting like nothing happened? Even my husband layed on the couch for two days after he got "fixed"...LOL.
I am afraid they are gonna hurt themselves. This has been a weird day.
