not that yard

Hi guys,

I was hoping someone might have some suggestions for me, because I really dont know how to solve this problem.

First off, this question isn't for me, its for a friend who lives across the street from my grandmother. This friend has a child who is alittle....different. There is a term, but honestly I don't remember it. But she don't really know restraint, mostly because she is kind of stuck at the mental age of 6 or so. And she, like I at that age, loves animals, and even moreso, baby kittens. So she tends to pick up strays and bring them home. Her parents are very good about it. Even though they don't have alot, they always make sure their cats (they are up to about 8 now) have food, are healthy, and are taken care of. They don't however keep them inside. They are inside outside cats, and they can't keep them inside all the time, they don't have the room and its not really something they believe in.

Now this is where they problem comes in. For the most part they get along with everyone in the area and they enjoy all the cats (one of them is even 3 legged and he is a favorite of most who see him). But there is a older lady who lives next door who does not like animals. Normally I would keep out of this, but the other day I was old that she has started putting large rat traps and even poison in her yard to "get" their cats, and when she gets them, she either THROWS them over the fence (after being in the rat traps) or calls animal control. And personally I don't think this is right or safe any way you look at it. He (my friend) has tried to talk to her about it, but she just starts shouting about how they are ruining her flowers (to be fair, I don't know if they have or not, but its possible).

I'm told that its not against they law or anything for her to do this as long as its only in her yard. So the question is: How can he stop his cats from going in her yard? Is there a way?

I'm at a lost myself, but I hate thinking of those poor cats. I'm going to be driving up there next weekend to help my grandmother, and I thought if someone had an idea I could suggest it then and maybe even give him a hand with it. Thanks for any help.

I wish I could come up with a miracle answer for you, but unfortunately I don't see any way to keep the cats out of her yard while still letting them out short of an enclosure.

My two suggestions would be:
1) build an outdoor enclosure
2) keep them indoors only
3) rehome them where they won't be killed

It's only a matter of time before one gets into the rat poison & by the time they realize it, it will be too late to save the kitty.

My neighbor in the back does not seem to like cats. She has mean dogs loose in her yard to keep them (even people I guess) off her property.
I am not saying you tell your friend to ask the old lady to get a dog. But I've been told there are good cat repellents in the market. One of them (I read it here) is this one

Do they have a fenced-in yard? You can get slanted extensions for fences to keep cats in the yard.

In the state of Texas, the rat poison laid out for the express purpose of killing a neighbor's cat on their property is covered under animal abuse laws and is a class A misdemeanor or FELONY offense following previous conviction:
Quote:
Sec. 42.09. Cruelty to Animals:

(a) A person commits an offense if he intentionally or knowingly:
kills, injures, or administers poison to an animal, other than cattle, horses, sheep, swine, or goats, belonging to another without legal authority or the owner's effective consent;
I can understand trapping the animal or calling animal control, and IMO it is the responsibility of the owner to control where their cats do and don't go and don't believe in keeping outdoor cats for a variety of reasons, but that doesn't excuse the poison, so I would look up state laws and have it dealt with immediately. I can assure you once the authorities show up on the premise, with or without a conviction, that will stop immediately.

Could they build an outside enclosure? Or find a way to keep all the cats inside? Maybe try some type of cat repellant?
