I think I have the stupidest neighbour

The new neighbour let's her dog run loose. It has nipped my daughter a few time. Ripped her gloves off when she was sliding and destroyed them. Today Raina was sliding at the park across the street. This darn dog starts biting her. Dh goes to the ladies house and says your dog is biting kids you need to do something. She says I'm on the phone. Dh says them I'll do something. She sends her son to get the dog. Raina comes home, takes off her coat. She has bruises and bite marks all up her hand and arm. I take her to the neighbours to show her what her dog has done. She tells me she will talk to her dog and tell her not to do it again . I say you can't just let the dog run loose. She says I tell she isn't allowed to leave the yard, but she doesn't listen . At this point I am just standing there, I don't know what else to day. I had phoned the police earlier in the day when I found a lost credit card. When they came to pick it up. I told them what had happened. Both officers start laughing. They took a report and went to talk to her.

Take pictures of the bruises and bite marks.

Does this woman happen to be the wife of the guy with the truck with the broken parking break that keeps rolling into the park?

The police just laughed at your child's injuries? That's low.

I'm guessing they were laughing at the neighbor's response to Marianne's conversation with her neighbor. I mean - that's just nuts!

for your daughter!! I hope she's not scared of dogs now!

I took pictures before the officers came. The officers forgot their camera, but both of the drew diagrams of were the bruises were.

The police weren't laughing at my daughter's injures. They were very sweet to her. They were laughing at how stupid the lady is.

After going to her house 4 times, She finally answered her door. She admits the dog bit Raina. It wasn't the first time. She started to cry. The officer told her, she needs to keep her dog in her yard. She said from now on the dog will be tied up. I hate seeing dogs tied, but it is better than the dog biting kids.

I misread that, I'm sorry

I don't usually recommend this because the animal is a product of its environment, but you need to call animal control! It's only a matter of time before the dog does some very serious injuries to someone, and IMHO it already has! It's been biting your daughter to the point it leaves bite marks and bruises!

Call animal control and report the animal, and the owner.

I feel badly for that dog because it has a stupid owner. That person doesn't deserve to have a pet!!!

I was thinking about your situation, and I have to agree. I would call animal control. Here a dog bite is a BIG deal, especially on/towards a child. You would get more than a slap on the wrist and told to keep your dog tied up. The next time this dog bites it could break the skin or do permanent, terrible damage to someone. What if it gets a hold of a baby?? Something needs to be done about this.

I agree the lady doesn't deserve to have this dog. Unfortunately I live in a very small town there is no animal control or dog catcher. The police told me to also report this to the villiage office. If they get another report they can call in an animal control officer from the city to deal with the dog. My concern is the bites are getting worse. The playground across the street is often full of little one playing. If some one doesn't do something the dog is going to seriously injure a child. If My daughter hadn't been wearing a heavy winter coat and mittens, that bite would have been a whole lot worse

From your description it doesn't sound like the dog is aggressively biting. It sounds like an enthusiastic, mouthy, untrained puppy. That doesn't necessarily make it better--a large mouthy pup could certainly hurt someone if she's not properly taught bite inhibition. But I don't think she'll be ripping anybody's throat out anytime soon. She still needs to be contained of course (for her own safety as well as that of the humans), and I do hope your neighbor does a good job of keeping her dog on her property. It's always a hard situation when it involves animals and/or children.

How stupid can people get? Hopefully she'll contain the dog and get a fence up now that the police have been involved.

Oh, I don't know... No stupider than any parent who says they'll "talk to their kids about misbehaving."

Well, OK, maybe a little stupider, since I don't know any dogs who actually understand more than a few words. Which, I guess, is different from understanding them, but ignoring them, which is what most kids do.

I agree with the others that this is a potentially dangerous dog, even if it isn't now. Undisciplined dogs running free are an invitation to disaster.

What an IDIOT! I would have been livid! I really hope that the police were able to talk some sense into her, but it doesn't sound like the woman is all there. Poor Raina!

That woman needs to have her dog taken away. I would be leery of animal control because I would hate to see an animal euthanized due to the non-actions of its owner.

They need to find a good foster home for the dog.

I really hate to see a dog spend its life tied up all the time. But it can't be trusted without the woman actually spending some of her time training the dog. I'm truly sorry about your little girl and I fear for the other little ones in the neighborhood.

I think I would take your little girl to the doctor, simply to make sure the whole thing is on file and to make sure the bites and bruises are OK. And then I'd send the doctor bill to the dog's owner. Sometimes people only get it when there's money involved.

Some people shouldn't really have pets.

I agree! If someone does not teach their dog early on the biting, even while playing, is bad you get this kind of behavior. There are other options besides keeping the dog tied up. But most are not always cheap. They make fences that you place into the ground about 3 feet to keep a dog from digging out. And also ones that lean in 40 degrees or so at the top so they cannot climb over or jump over it. Also the underground fences usually work well. But not with very stubborn dogs.
I would just keep a very close eye on your daughter and warn other parents in the park about the dog and what is going on with it. If it happens again then the cops will need to be contacted asap! Although if the dog is taken for bitin. A child it will be put down which really sucks since it's obvious this dog has just never been taught any better.
You may want to also get either a squirt bottle or a can of dog mace to have just incase. Maybe at least try to make the dog know your daughter is not a play thing.

We had a similarly stupid neighbor once. I ended up being on a first-name basis with animal control.

I don't think this dog is meaning to hurt people. She is just trying to play. She is a very strong dog. I thought she was a red healer. The police officers believes she is a a red healer/pitbull cross. She is only about 8 months old. She is not trained in any way. She doesn't come when she is called. She just runs wild. She is a danger to everyone including her self. I don't want any dog tied up. Given a choice between her tying her dog, or more kids getting bit. The dog is going to have to be tied. I doubt any training will be done with this dog. I am hoping when spring comes they will fence their yard. I don't think this will be the last of it. That lady is just not all there.

Some people are just plain dumb.
Gah she really sounds like a moron, and that is precisely the kind of dog she would have.
Ugh, yeah, Heelers are drivey dogs, not suitable for casual pet homes. They need a lot of mental stimulation, and tend to have less patience with kids. Pit bulls are better pets and tend to like kids more, but are still drivey. Pit/Heeler mixes are commonly used as hog hunting dogs--very tough and active! Not great for a home that won't do a lot of trainng and exercising. Poor dog. Plus, at her age, if she's running loose or tied outside she's going to end up pregnant, making more active, drivey dogs who will be placed in unsuitable homes. A bad situation all around. Too bad more can't be done about the situation.
