I blend two types of food 50/50 (dry) and was wondering if it would be OK to store it in one of those aluminum cans that sell at walmart filled with popcorn for the holidays. Do you guys know which ones I am talking about? They come with three different types of popcorn.

The can is empty and I was thinking that maybe i could use it to store the food here. Any thoughts?

Have a great day,

Eddie

I used to! Until I outgrew those and moved on to a larger, flip-top plastic storage container.

If they keep popcorn fresh, they can keep cat kibble fresh!

Depends on how quickly you go through food, and what the food is preserved with.

If you use a premium food with no chemical preservative, the shelf life of the food is pretty short compared to a cheaper food with a chemical preservative (BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin), therefore better to store in an airtight container.

I buy food in 16 pound bags, premium food, naturally preserved.
I store in a tin like you describe.
I feed 3 cats.
By the time I get the last bit of food from the tin, it is starting to go stale (about 2.5 weeks).

I store my food in an airtight pet food container. I buy a 12 pound bag and pour it in then transfer some into a smaller plastic food container and use that until it is empty then go to the larger container and refill. That way I a not opening up the larger container a few times a day to let air in.

I am sure the tin would be just fine if you go through the food in about two weeks

As long as the lid fits tightly it should work just fine. I use 1-gallon glass jars with lids that screw on. Anything that's airtight should work as well.
