Gracie needs vibes- in dental surgerie right now

A couple of days ago Gracie was eating her pill treat, when I heard a crack- I thought she had bitten into the pill, but since then I noticed she has been opening her mouth wide after every bite, and a couple of times had difficulty swallowing... I watched her close, and she was eating ok... But today she didn't eat and I immediately called the dentist; luckily they had an opening... Well... She is in surgery right now to remove her canine- it will likely be a 2-step surgery; first step, done today, to remove the infected and loose canine, and the second, later on, to take care of the open fistula.
This couldn't come in a worst time, as not only I am flat broke with all of Bugsy's issues, but also I am going out of town Sunday for a couple of days. Hopefully she will be somewhat ok by then...
Please if you can spare some vibes for her, it would be great... She is an older girl and she is going to go through some major pain...

Oh no! So sorry to hear about sweet Gracie... I hope she recovers quickly and feels better SOON!

Oh no! Poor Gracie! Thankfully, though, you caught it quickly and are getting it taken care of. Praying all goes well and she recovers quickly.

and prayers for you both

I am here at the dentist right now- the vet/dentist just stepped out to tell me she is doing well, however this will definitely be a 2-step surgery. The tooth was very rotten and diseased, broken at the root, it was extracted, they will clean the infection, but I will have to return to close the internal area later on.

for Gracie and for you - but at least you were home when the tooth cracked, and were able to keep a close eye on her. And how fortunate you knew who to call and that they had an opening. Best wishes for a successful end to the surgery, quick healing, and that you and all your babies have a healthy 2011.

Poor Gracie She is so lucky to have you

Poor girl! Wonder if this has had an impact on why she's been somewhat crabby?? I am SOOOO glad you adopted her and are taking care of her.

Lots of for you and Gracie.

You really deserve a break, Carolina. I hope the new year brings good health to you and your felines.

I hope they can give Gracie a pain killer that will make her comfortable. It's a good thing your pet sitter is a vet tech.

Hi guys, thanks for the vibes
Poor girl must been in pain for a while, as her tooth situation was not good... The tooth was so diseased that the infection "ate" the bone mass in between the mouth and the nose, creating a "fistula", a hole. Here is the tooth, for the curious ones... it is nasty, I warn you. They extracted the tooth, cleaned the infection, put some bone implant and did not suture it close so the infection can drain.
In two weeks or so she will have a follow up visit to schedule a second surgery, when the bone will be "reconstructed", and the fistula closed.
Even though she took an injection for pain, she is in a LOT of pain, and not able to eat at the moment. I bought her some fancy feast and when she tried to eat she opened her mouth really wide and ran crying
I was instructed to no matter what, to not open her mouth, so I can not force feed her. She did take fluids today, so I will see how she does tomorrow as far as food intake. She did eat a little in the morning... Hopefully tomorrow she will feel a little better.
She is not on oral antibiotics for the same reasons (opening her mouth can split open the wound); so Kelly will come over every other day to give her an injection of antibiotics (Kelly works at the dentist Clinic).
I kept thinking today what would've happened if she was staying outside... I think this would be the end of her...
Sometimes I feel bad for her that she is here and she feels afraid of my cats, and she doesn't have all the space she should have on a house of her own... But then something like this happens and it changes my mind... Because I know if she had been outside she would die for sure. Of Thyroid or of this infection... And at least here she can be healthy and loved I guess...
On a good note, she gained 1.5lbs in the short 2 months she's been here - toothache and all She is now 9.2lbs, her coat shiny, and her eyes bright! Let's hope she is soon pain free as well!

And on another good note, thank goodness they made payment arrangements for me, as my bill, after a $276.05 discount, was still $400... They divided that in two monthly payments (Thanks to Kelly). I was already Flat broke, now I am under the floor, smashed down broke. Don't know, no clue, how I am going to do the surgery, but Kelly said they will work with me so that I pay what I can monthly... I will just do all I can for her an Bugsy... That's all I can do, right?
Thanks for the vibes guys, she will need them for a while, for this surgery and the next!

Carolina, a caring vet makes a world of difference. Gary and I are waiting with baited breath for a payment due us so we can get caught up at the vets, but I was just there getting food, and the office manager told me to stop worrying. So many of us are right there with you!

I KNOW you feel bad about the space. But we live in an RV with 8. Trust me, it's not about space, it's about quality. Gracie is one VERY lucky lady.

What about boiling her some chicken broth? Does she lap liquid more easily than trying to eat? If that works, maybe shred some chicken REALLY fine....

Poor baby, is all I keep thinking. Gary has horrible teeth, and he's got teeth that didn't get that bad - but almost, and that was just EXCRUCIATING for him. I really wonder if this has affected the way she reacts to the other kitties, and once her second surgery is behind her and she's healed up if things will change.....

But for right now, I'm just sending heaps of vibes her way, poor baby! And some for you too.
Poor baby!!! Both of you! All I can think is that God, or fate, will provide what you need, when you need it, to take care of this poor little girl. I can't believe how she's flourished already under your care, and that's with this bad tooth.

And, yes, thanks be that you have one angel in Kelly to help you and Gracie...somehow it must have been meant to be that you met this particular practice at this particular time.

Yeah Lorie... Nobody beats the space situation like you do! The problem here is another - the problem here is Bugsy limits her space a bunch, but that is another story... I am dealing with it like we spoke about it...
About the food: I blended the Fancy Feast on my smoothie maker, so it was a liquidy paste, very sof, almost liquid really... softer than baby food. As much as it touched her mouth, she ran in pain. She just might be very sore... Imagine that she just had her gums opened, the bone scraped, tooth extracted, a bone implant placed... all that right in front of her mouth.
Hopefully tomorrow she will be better...

Oh poor Gracie!

Lots of good that tomorrow she'll be feeling better and can get some food in. After one of Cotton's big surgeries, we actually had to end up moving where we fed him because the old place had such an association with pain that he wouldn't go there to eat. Hopefully everything will go smoothly for Gracie from here on in.

That's so distressing about Gracie's pain and her not being able to eat. And she's on pain meds? And what happens tomorrow? Do they think she will be a lot better? Is she going to have pain medicine when the shot wears off?

She is so very lucky to have you. Without your help she'd be done for now.

You are so good about updates, and I'm so glad because. I'll be thinking about poor Gracie a lot.

All night.

Awww Robin, thank you
Yes, she does have pain meds... It's a strong one too - Nalbuphine. I will start tomorrow morning, 2-3 times a day, depending on her pain levels.
Thank you for thinking of my sweet old little lady

I looked at that tooth and all I can say is that it's a miracle she's been able to eat ANYTHING! No wonder she's been a bit on the crabby side, between the thyroid and this! God bless you for loving and saving Gracie!

I wouldn't worry about the space either. Kitties are so much more adaptable than we are. I'm sure she's thankful for a safe home, someone who cares about her, and a steady supply of food than space.

Thank you Stephanie
Yes, the tooth was pretty bad... They made a point to bring it out to show it to me. It is brittle and looks like there are some hollow spaces - very strange. I tried to see how hard it was, an outer piece broke right off; it had to be very painful, I am glad it is out.
She is a cutie pie... It is tough to see her in pain I was sitting there petting her, next thing I know she was laying on my lap... That's a first right there - I think she wants to be babied now that she doesn't feel well...
Hopefully tomorrow morning she is going to eat something... If she doesn't I am going to call Kelly to see if there is something we can do about it. tonight I will leave her be.

You're absolutely right - Gracie wouldn't have survived her health problems outside and only minimally cared for, so you've done her a tremendous service taking her in, even if she's not thrilled about the other kitties and Bugsy's overtures. He might still win her over when she's feeling better and has settled in more.

I wonder if your neighbor's husband would pay Gracie's bill if you told him about it? It's definitely a pre-existing condition.

Lots of that she's feeling better and eating by tomorrow!
Gracie will get used to Bugsy, and may some day even accept his overtures. Gracie has been through a lot, she just needs time to adjust, and in your home and heart she is being given all the time she needs, the health care she so desperately required and all the love she can want, all her needs are being met, that is what is important.

The fact that she crawled into your lap, and that that is a first, only illustrates what I am saying here. She just needs time in addition to everything else she is getting from you, it's all good. Baby steps, Carolina, Baby Steps.

I hope the pain medication is helping her so she can get some food into her tummy. Do you have sub q fluids to give her, if she won't eat today?
