Inside Out

Hi,

We've had our rescue cat, Jake, since August. He is a big 6 year old neutered Tom who is a complete wuss and likes to stay inside. He only goes outside into the back yard if someone goes with him and even a bird chirping spooks him into running back indoors.

Now, all of a sudden he has started demanding to go out. The first few times were under cover of darkness and he even stayed out all night twice, but then we had the snow and bad weather so he was content to stay inside. Now he wants to go out again, this time first thing in the morning. If I don't let him out, he whines the place down. I'm sure the neighbours must think we're mistreating him with the noice he makes!!!!

I don't want to let him out, but I understand that I must let him if he wants and that he'll come back but it's just so weird that literally one day he was stood on the doorstep wagging his tail and legging it back into the safety of the house at the slightest noise and now he's getting stroppy about wanting to go out.

Does anyone else's cat have these mood swings?

Another quick question, does anyone know how long a cat sleeps per day. Not necessarily in one go. We have to just about tazer Jake to get him to shift!

I'll upload a picture of him when I work out how!

I don't know about outdoor vs indoor since I live in Chicago, but I do know cats sleep usually 16 - 20 hours per day.

You DON'T have to let him out. You are the owner and determine whether or not he goes outside. He most likely is smelling a cat in heat or something. Keep him inside and distract him with toys and playtime when he wants to go out. Does he have a cat tree near a window he can sit in and watch the world outside? Put up a bird feeder near the window so he has entertainment.

He might have just gotten confident enough (or bored enough) with his new indoor home that he's finally ready to go out. He's also had time to see what's going on out there through the windows, I assume, so he might just be more generally prepared.

Or yeah, there might be something out there that smells really appealing to him.

You do NOT have to let them out. You are the boss, not them.
