Have you seen this carrier?

The rescue we got the boys from gave us a free carrier! She had a bunch of them donated to the rescue so she gave us one. It came with this little "blanket" type thing, made out of super soft fleece (the minky kind, if you know what that is) that has velcro tabs on the bottom so you can stick it down and it won't move around or bunch up in one end but you can take it out and wash it. I was just reading the sticker on the side of it, and it has a pheromone dispenser inside it. You can put a product called Calm-Quil in the dispenser, and each one lasts one week. I can't believe they would just give me something like that! I looked it up b/c I was trying to find the Calm-Quil refills, and it normally costs $50! That was SOOOO nice of them!!

I got the 23" one

Wow, that was really nice of them! What a great idea for the insert! We have ... I don't know how to describe them - but pads we put in the carriers so the cats don't slide around, but they just fit right so they don't need velcro. Also, all of our carriers fold down.

But we do spray them with Feliway.

The carrier they were brought to me in had this insert/pad that looked hand made. It had regular fleece on one side, stuffing in the middle, and then the bottom had the grippy shelf liner. I think the thought was right, but it still slid around and got bunched up. It was cute, though.

Yeah, the velcro is a great idea. It's just we also use the pads as cat beds when not in the carriers - this way they smell "comforting" when they go in the carriers. I think it'd be hard to keep the velcro from becoming all stuck with cat hair.

...but to the point, it is a really cool crate, and people will probably appreciate the link!

Those are great carriers and so nice of the rescue to give you one! We have 2 with the top-loading thing and we love them. It makes it so easy to put them in the carrier. I just throw a towel in the bottom for our kitties. They weigh enough to hold it down!

Yep, I have one of them... mine is blue.
Took me a little bit to get used to the door but I like it a lot, especially the top opening, which I use to pet Bugsy in the way to the vet when I stop in the red lights, or when waiting on the vets office.
Mine didn't come with the fleece insert, but I always put their favorite blanket inside and spray it with feliway.
I need to buy a couple more, at least... I am short with 2 carriers and 4 cats...

Mine doesn't have the top loading function.

Nice carrier! I think I may have seen those at Petsmart, I saw some type of carrier that came with a calming product dispenser or some sort...

I can't use Feliway around my house, I have one cat, Spot, who just hates the stuff. I used the spray on some bedding and Spot freaked out when he smelled it and act terrified of it, he refused to go anywhere near the area where I had put the bedding and when I tried to carry him near it (because I was trying to figure out what the problem was) he started flailing to get away. Luckily I only used the spray and not the diffuser, I'd hate to see what would have happened if it was more in the air.
I wonder if the Calm-Quil stuff would have a better effect.

We have that exact carrier (shown in the link) that has the top opening. Like Carolina, one of ours is blue, and the newest one is gray. I think both are the 23 inchers, but we got one a couple of years ago, and one this year. I would kill to have an insert fleece pad like you describe . Right now we just throw in a couple of towels and a "used" T-shirt when we take the kids anywhere, but a fleece pad would probably be more comfy.

I have a Petmate carrier from Petsmart that has the side and top doors. I like it a lot. The only thing I don't like is that the handle could use more cushioning, especially when carting around my big, heavy Claude.

I need to get another one or two also.

I have two antique carriers from the 1960's. They are made out of some kind of heavy duty cardboard like stuff with plastic on it. The last time I had one of them at the vet's he said I should try to sell it on ebay as an antique cat carrier as I could maybe get a lot for it.

It still works, though.

Those are nice carriers, and I like the velcro idea - I'll have to try that. I usually just put a thick towel in the bottom, and it sometimes comes out with the cat at the vet's.

I love the top-loading carriers for putting cats in, and getting scared cats out at the vet's office. Another thing that's nice is a shoulder strap - I need both a sturdy handle and a shoulder strap to carry Jamie or Miezi to and from the car. They're each >16 lbs.

The best thing I've found for padding carriers is to get a small-sized crate mat for dogs, like this:

It doesn't bunch up and if you get it the same size as your carrier it won't slide around either. You can usually find something like that at Petsmart or Petco.

I wouldn't feel safe carrying my boys to the bus withouut a shoulder strap, it was one of the key features I looked for. I have the dog whisperer carrier, 23". Its kind of weird carting my cats around since the shoulder strap says 'dog whisperer' all across it, but it has a top loader and it was $10 cheaper than the other 23" carriers. I sewed a fleece mat for it with a wire frame because Memphis usually ended up in one half of the carrier with the bunched up towel in the other half.
