A new one for me - ruptured anal gland

I noticed Molly licking her behind a lot last night, so when I finally nabbed her & took a look I saw a hole in her bum! Had to drop one of the dogs off @ the vet before work this AM, so dropped her off to.

Apparently she has a ruptured anal gland. This is a new one for me, I've never had to deal w/ anal gland issues before. I've been searching the forums & found some good/resourceful threads, like this one. Seems like my vet took a common course - she's on antibiotics & gets panalog/anamax ointment in the "hole" also. She had her butt cleaned/shaved today @ the vet too. Poor nekkid bum Molly!

I'm glad I took her in today, as the vet is now closed until Monday. I'm hoping this won't become a lifelong issue, as she is a PITA to catch to get medicated. She likes to play 'catch me if you can' & she can outrun me!

Aww, poor little girl - my Dharma had an anal gland that was almost abcessed...I honestly never saw her demonstrate any of the normal signs. It was caught when she was having a dental done and I had asked the vet to double check the glands (my other cat had to have his expressed, so I thought I was just being cautious - good thing I was nervous).

They infiltrated the area with antibiotics and she was on Clavomox for about a week. SHe wasn't a very happy camper, but, knock wood, she healed well.

Now I'm forever asking the vet to check their glands. I hope she heals quickly and this is a one time occurrence.

So far her behind looks good. She's a champ about the panalog ointment in the ruptured anal gland, but a pain to get a pill into! Tomorrow's pill I'm going to see if I can sneak into a pill pocket.

Much would have problems with her anal glands. Fortunately not to the point where they ruptured. She would exhibit the same symptoms as her UTI so she would get a trip to the vet.

When she had her regular exams, I always had the vet look and do some preventative squeezing.

Hopefully we won't have this problem.... glad she's OK with the ointment, and hope the pill pocket works!

oh wow, this is the first i ever heard of that. goodness, poor baby!
i'm glad you took her in and already have a plan of action..even if she does have a nekkid bum
