I just found out that my 4month old kitten has feline herpesvirus and I was wondering if anyone knows if she can still get vaccinated for it??

also, I was told by the vet that what she has can not affect people but then was told by someone that conjunctivitis can be spread to humans from cats and that is one of the symptoms of this so i was wondering if anyone can clarify this for me please??

Thank you..

Almost all cats have herpesvirus. It's not really a big deal. . .most of the time it's dormant, and only comes out when the cat is under stress. The vaccine only lessens the severity, doesn't prevent it entirely. If the cat already has it, there's no point in getting the vaccine, but since it's usually part of the panleuk combo shot, you probably can't avoid it.

You can give your cat 500 mg of the amino acid l-lysine per day (1000 mg per day during an outbreak) to suppress the virus. The most recommended kind is NOW brand powder (you can buy it from Amazon. About $15 for a pound, which will last you almost 2 years). It dissolves easily in the cat's water, or can be mixed with canned food. It either doesn't have a taste, or cats like it because my cats don't seem to notice it at all.

There are really that many cats with herpes? I didn't know it was nearly so prevalent; I haven't been able to find much information about it online.

Was she tested for Herpes using the Real PCR URD test or is this just a diagnosis based on symptoms? I ask because there are other things that can cause conjunctivitis.

It's no use getting her vaccinated for it since she already has it. It's best managed by diet and keeping the stress to a minimum in your home. Also, Lysine given twice daily (500mg maintenance, 1000mg during a flare up) will help.

she was diagnosed based on symptoms, conjunctivitis and a 105 fever. she was also just getting over a URI and she was a shelter kitten.. im more curious about whether the conjunctivitis is contagious for me or not??

The general consensus is 70% infected and 50% of those active and needing treatment... One of my vets says she thinks about 80% the other said he rarely sees one without and say 95%

Thanks sharky, that's good to know. Though, now I'm going to be freaking out over pseudo herpes symptoms lol.

It IS contageous to humans, but you would need to touch her eye then touch your own. It's always best to wash your hands after handling a sick animal, regardless if it's your own or not. Doing that will almost eliminate the possibility of you getting pink eye.
