Is this still play?

Luna and Midnight both have Soft Paws over their claws. Midnight has a couple that have fallen off. I heard Luna scream, so I ran over to them. Her nose is cut, and her neck is cut, both bleeding, not bleeding bad where I'd have to rush her to the vet. But a little bit of blood in both places. I cleaned her up. She seems ok now. That's the first time Midnight actually cut her with his claws. Was that an accident while playing? or was he attacking her, with claws, to hurt her?

My kitties have occasionally scratched each other in both play and "acts of dominance." I think "attacking" behavior would also involve bites so in this case I'd go with "play gone wild" but also keep a close eye on the kitties for a few days, as well as recap or trim those oncovered claws.

Have they had Soft Paws on for a long time? Maybe he's used to playing rough and not realizing he hurt her?

It sounds like he didn't realise how hard he was playing, especially with some soft paws missing

They always played rough to begin with. They've had their Soft Paws on since the beginning of November. Midnight's gone through 2 sets so far. He'll be getting more put on this Sunday, when he goes to the vet. Luna's are still on.

I also think Midnight just got used to having the soft paws on, so he was playing normally, but his uncovered claws probably did the scratching.

It sounds like Midnight got so used to having those soft paws on that he lost his knowledge of when to hold back when not wearing them. He's probably scratched her with that level of strength tons of times but not had any feedback to tell him he's going at it too hard.

He stopped trying to play when she got injured, right?
