I don't have a Kindle so I'm confused.

How do you "loan" someone something on a computer for a limited period of days? When something is downloaded onto someone's computer, they can use it indefinitely until they delete it. Even computer trial programs can be used forever if you know your way around the registry. Are they expecting people to be on the honour system and delete the book after reading it? If so, I think they have too much faith in the human race. I don't see that happening.

Unfortunately, she might not be able to use it.
Is lending available internationally?

At this time, Kindle book lending can only be initiated by customers residing in the United States. If a loan is initiated to a customer outside the United States, the borrower may not be able to accept the loan if the title is not available in their country due to publisher geographical rights.
I'm disappointed. I thought I'd be able to lend to my niece and nephew.

Even if the book is saved to your hard drive, you can't access it without the Kindle Reader application. Ditto if the application is on your smartphone. You could try changing the format and saving it that way, but would probably end up with alphabet soup.
