As I've posted before, I received a Nook for Christmas. And, I love it! However, I am finding it difficult to decide upon books to purchase and then download. Most of that is due to the fact that, while I am an avid reader, I am also very picky about what I choose to read -- especially if it's something that I need to put money into. So, I figured, why not check out TCS to see what members here recommend as far as books?

As I said, I'm fairly picky where books are concerned. I do not like science fiction books of any kind and am typically bored to tears by romance novels. My go-to books are usually fiction novels centered around present-day social issues. I also like "autobiographical" novels involving, you guessed it -- pets! Mysteries and true crime books are also good reads though I do prefer fiction to non-fiction under most circumstances. And, I'm not into cheeky, quick reads. I like my books to be thought-provoking. I know I've written more about what I don't like than what I do, but here are some authors and books that I've read that I have loved (so that you have an idea of what I like):

Jodi Picoult (I've read every one of her books and just downloaded her latest book, "House Rules" onto my e-reader.)
Lisa Gardner (I've read all of her mystery novels and have already pre-ordered her newest novel set to come out in March.)
Alice Sebold (I liked her books, "The Lovely Bones," and "Lucky," but was not a fan of "The Almost Moon.")
"Marley & Me" is the type of "autobiographical" book I like regarding pets.
"Homer's Odyssey" is about a cat and his family and I have already downloaded the book, but have not started reading it as of yet (but I know I'll like it -- it's right up my alley).
"Room" is a best-selling novel that I've just started to read, but am really enjoying so far.

So, any suggestions of authors or books? I do have a couple of books already downloaded and ready for me to begin reading, but I am a very fast reader and can finish a book within a couple of hours. Therefore, I am going to need to build up my library quite a bit to keep up with me! Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated -- thanks in advance!

I just got done reading the Sister to Sister series by Virginia Smith. I downloaded the first one for free from Amazon & then the other two I had to pay for, but they are great!

I love Jodi Picoult too. She's next on my list to read more of

Have you read the Dewey the Library Cat books by Vicki Myron? How about Dean Koontz's A Big Little Life, about his dog?

For mysteries, Jonathan Kellerman, Kathy Reichs and Simon Beckett come to mind.

Do you like forensics? Right now I'm reading an absolutely fascinating true crime/non-fiction book about a serial killer in late 19th century France and the development of modern forensic science. It's called The Killer of Little Shepherds and is by Douglas Starr.

You and I seem to have a very similar taste in books. If you like Jodi Picoult you will most likely like Luanne Rice. I have read all of both of their books, and they are similar. You would probably also like Tami Hoag, mystery/crime type books, very easy to read. Have you tried Nicholas Sparks? He's similar to Jodi Picoult/Luanne Rice also in the style and readability. Iris Johansen is another one that I really like. I have read every book of all of these authors.

Have fun!!!!

Have you read Three Cups of Tea? I've heard it's an excellent book, and it sounds like it might be.... your cup of tea (hehe!). It's high on my list of books to read.

Some other books that my book club has enjoyed are:

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
Still Alice by Lisa Genova
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein (dog related)
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
Passing by Nella Larson (a Penguin Classic, only $1.99 on the Nook
)

Thank you for all of the suggestions. Let's just say that my e-book wishlist on Barnes and Noble is now super long
.

It's funny that I posted this yesterday as I then received a $25.00 e-book gift certificate from my father and his wife for my birthday. So, me, with "money" burning a hole in my "pocket," I knew I had to download some new books. I think I'm obsessed!

So, with my money, I decided on three books:

1. "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen
2. "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein
3. "Oogy" by Larry Levin (This one is about a dog - a memoir of sorts.)

I now have 7 books in my Nook library and all are downloaded. And, I am just about to finish the first one. So, please, keep the suggestions coming!

Oooh Water for Elephants was one I was going to suggest for book club, I might download that to my mum's Kindle for her.

You should see if your local library has a book club, might be a good way to get suggestions - you can either join, or get a list of the books they're reading.

I loved Art of Racing in the Rain - but I cried...then again, I cry at sad commercials. It's really not a sad book...I still cried.

I think you'll enjoy Homer!

You might enjoy books written by Linda Farstein.

Also check out Ariana Franklin. Her main character is a women "doctor" solving crimes in the 12th century. I have three books by her and they are really good reads.

If you like historical fiction check out books by Edward Rutherford or Diane Garaboldan (may be mispelt).

Rutherford's books are good and have the added advantage that they're so long you won't whiz through them in one sitting.
