how long after neuter does their pee stop smelling?

We got Sebastian neutered today (poor baby...)
He's almost 10 months and his pee was really starting to smell very strongly of ammonia.
I'm just wondering when it will go back to normal?
(so that I can dump all the old litter and start fresh!)

The only male cat I have was neutered before I got him, so I don't have any direct experience with this. I've heard that the male hormones can linger for a couple of months after neutering.

I would recommend that you go ahead and dump the old litter and thoroughly clean the litter boxes now. It's possible that he's re-activating the smell that's already in the litter every time he wets it down.

It can take a few weeks until the hormone levels drop but do dump that litter as every deposit of pee will just increase the smell regardless.

With Chumley this summer it was three days. But it can take a while.

It took a few days for the smell to peak and then a few weeks for it to disappear. Nuts was 12- 13 months old when he was done.
