Hello all!

I'm new to this forum, so I will need some help regarding taking care of my new kitten.

Thanks!

Here's my new kitten, my family called her "Lily".

She's about eight weeks old, and we got her just couple days ago.

She's currently sleeping... shhhhhh...

Thanks for the replies, here's several questions that comes to mind about Lily:

1) Recently Lily took a dump on my parents bed, my mother had quite a funny reaction to it. Will this change her habit of pooping? I been lately checking on her, hoping she will take a poop in her rectangular washroom thing (Dunno what's it's called) not taking a poop elsewhere. I just hoped that if she does sleep with us, she will know where to poop, not anywhere she pleases.

2) Why does she meow?

3) My grandma says that she will excrete unusual poop if I pull her tail... is that true?

4) How do I discipline her? Sometimes she goes scratching on things that should be avoided like me or like if she does something she is not suppose to.

5) Is it normal for kitten to not sleep on her personal bed (cushion for cats)? I heard she slept with my sister and on a chair but not on her bed.

6) When does she sleep? For some reason, last night she was still energetic. How much sleep does Lily need? She woke up in the middle of the night scratching my sister...

7) Food... Solid or wet?

8) Is it normal to leave her alone? I mean she is still a baby.

9) Should I confine her in a place or let her explore on her own? Should I let her venture into our basement where it's cold during night?

10) How do I make her be attend to me when I call her name?

11) The sounds she make, is it purring? It's very constant.

Those are the questions I have, please answer them so I can take care of Lily properly.

Thanks

Kittens are a bit like babies, when they have to go, they can't hold it all that long. How many litterboxes do you have and how large is your house?

Kittens and cats have various meowing "habits"...she might be looking for her littermates if you just got her.

She won't have strange poops if you pull her tail, but you shouldn't anyway.
If it gets pulled REALLY hard, it can dislocate, and cause all sorts of nerve damage.

You can discipline her by tapping her nose very lightly and saying "no" or scruffing her gently and say "no". That is kind of the way momma kitties do it, and that's why they are saying more often to leave the kittens with the momma until 12 - 14 weeks because she teaches them a little better how to behave. Just because they can eat and use the litter box, there is still more for them to know.

Kittens are very playful. And it seems like they want to play all night sometimes. They do grow out of it eventually. Remember to see how much she sleeps during the day.

I would give her both solid and wet kitten food of a high quality. The wet has to be taken away if she doesn't eat it all fairly quickly or it gets icky.

I've left kittens alone before, but you are right, she will probably be happier if someone is even just in the room with her.

Some people kitten-proof their house just like baby-proofing. It depends on the kitty. Some like to chew on wires and do all sorts of things, and others are more mellow. If she wants to explore the basement, I would go with her, expecially if anything could fall on her.

Hope that helps!

Okay, I'll try to answer your questions!

Have you shown her the litter box? (That is what the box is called.) If she doesn't know where it is, she may poop in different places, take the poop and put it into the box. Usually the cat will get the idea after that.

2) Why does she meow?
She may be hungry, just want attention, be hurt, or happy. You will learn to decide what her meows mean.

3) My grandma says that she will excrete unusual poop if I pull her tail... is that true?
I don't believe so, but it isn't good to pull her tail anyway.

4) How do I discipline her? Sometimes she goes scratching on things that should be avoided like me or like if she does something she is not suppose to.
Say no in a serious tone. Scruffing is also a good method. Make sure that you know how to scruff your cat before doing it, though. Here's a link to a website that explains how to properly scruff a cat. http://www.ehow.com/how_2305440_scruff-cat.html
Remember, only scold your cat when you catch them doing something bad, not afterwards, or the cat won't understand.

5) Is it normal for kitten to not sleep on her personal bed (cushion for cats)? I heard she slept with my sister and on a chair but not on her bed.
Cats have different preferences as to where they like to sleep. Lily is probably just not choosing the bed you got her.

6) When does she sleep? For some reason, last night she was still energetic. How much sleep does Lily need? She woke up in the middle of the night scratching my sister...
Cats are more naturally more active at night, but they will usually learn to adapt to your schedule. They will sleep a lot of the time, Wessie sleeps a lot during the day, and a lot at night. Kittens also have different sleeping habits than full grown cats. Lily may wake you up early in the morning so that you will feed her, or just let her out of the room.

7) Food... Solid or wet?
We used to feed Wessie dry food until he had his urinary issues, now we feed him only wet. Cats get more water intake in wet, which is good because they don't drink that much water otherwise. Dry may add a higher risk of urinary issues.

8) Is it normal to leave her alone? I mean she is still a baby.
When Wessie was a baby we left him alone sometimes, and he didn't mind.

9) Should I confine her in a place or let her explore on her own? Should I let her venture into our basement where it's cold during night?
At first you might want to let her explore one room at a time, but as she begins to know you and feel at home, you can let her roam around the house.
You might want to take her upstairs at night if it gets very cold in the basement.

10) How do I make her be attend to me when I call her name?
Give her a treat, get another treat, show it to her, walk away, and then call her. She will probably come to get the treat. You can increase the distance, call her, and then reward her if she comes. Lily will probably begin to come when called, because she knows that she will be rewarded.

11) The sounds she make, is it purring? It's very constant.
If it sounds like a deep rumble, then it is purring. Since she is new, it may be because she is nervous. When we first got Wessie, he was constantly purring. I discovered that cats purr when nervous, hurt, scared, or happy, so it is probably because she a little scared of coming to a new place.

I hope this helped,

Eileen

Hi,

Lily is adorable, she looks just like Merlin (one of my cats) when he was a baby.

When you notice Lily, sniffing the floor a lot, scoop her up and put her in her litter tray. If she gets out, put her back. Eventually she will get the idea.

You'll be suprised how quick she will learn what to do, but expect some accidents.

Good luck to both of you...xxx
