have been a member of freecycle for a long time now but I have just noticed more and more pets for offer on there and I find this quite upsetting, this morning there was a 7 month old springer spaniel-I love those dogs and i would have snapped her up if it wasn't for the kitties and I have just read that a woman is giving away a 5 year old American Bulldog and a 5 month old male kitten due to bad health that has got worse!Well surely she knew 3 months ago that her health was bad when she got the flippin kitten and she said the dog needs alot of time as hes boisterous, sounds to me like she just cannot be bothered. I didn't think you were supposed to offer pets on freecycle but then again I hope these lovely animals get the home they deserve. This really upsets me. x

I think its too harsh to judge anyone based on just what you read in a quick ad posted on a website. She may not have known her health was bad. She may have gotten diagnosed with something horrible last month and has been told she only has a few months to live. Or wants to make sure the babies find a good home before she is unable to anymore.
And too many people go get a puppy because of its floppy face and cute huge ears and dont realize how crazy hyper that breed is. Any kind of bird dog needs a lot more room to run and play than say a dachshund. And while yeah that seems like something common sense, its not to everyone.
I think that sometimes there are things that come up out of your control and it will make you have to find a new or better home for your babies. Sometimes you need to suck up your pride and do what is best for them, even if that means finding them a home that can better care for them.
Or someones a dog or cat just shows up on your front step... it would take a harsh person to just leave it outside and let it find its own home! Even if you cannot keep it permanently you can post a few ads and try to find it a home while you can keep it!
I had to find my Kahlua a new home because at the time I was financially unable to provide care for 3 cats, esp. with Kahlua being allergic to grain, and I knew she would do best in a new home. So I talked to a friend and she took her and has been a wonderful mother to her, and Kahlua is extremely happy and well taken care of. It broke my heart to do it, and I cried the entire way home! But every time I get a text saying how much my friend loves her I know I did the right thing.
Basically this long rambling post is not to be so quick to judge what is going on with someones life and if they are trying to find a home that will be a good move and will provide all care needed and make sure the pet is happy, then I have no problem.
The ones that have new ads up every week giving away a new litter of puppies or kitties, yeah I have big problems with those people! But accidents do happen!

Pets on freecycle bother me a lot too. Using freecycle to place a living being via the Internet is not the best or most responsible way to find a pet a truly good FOREVER dedicated caring home. Many freecycle pets end up being cycled around for some rounds, as many pets are in the US. It is all so sad to me.

She said she had advertised the dog for several months and had nothing but timewasters, oh I don't know, maybe I shouldn't judge, probably better than taking them to the RSPCA.x

I agree with you 100% Ruthy! I see ads all the time here where animals are just being tossed away like disposable objects. Sure some may be due to dire, unforseen circumstances, but I personally believe that the MAJORITY of it is irresponsibility. I'm tired of the excuses. I really think being involved in rescue though that I am incredibly jaded.

Freecycle is especially annoying though to advertise animals as their motto is "keep it put of the dump" great!! I hope those dogs and kitties find a lovely home, such a shame.x

My local freecycle have pets advertised too. Not alot but many of the people posting on freecycle are pretty particular for the new homes. Many times I reply back to provide names of local rescues. But many times the pets-mainly cats find a home and its posted within a day or two.

When I used to keep pet rats I got a lovely pair of freecycle with a beautiful cage , lots and lots of accessories , more then the 2 needed to be honest and enough bedding and food for months. The owner had a place at Uni and couldn't take the ratties with her. She was very upset to see them go but happy that I took them on.

However a lot of them time you see the same users post animals usually litters of cats or puppies every 6 weeks or so .. then you want to throw a slap and say neuter your animal or keep and love/care for there offspring

Unfortunately the few people who are guienly in need for some to love and care for there animals are bad named for the idiots who get there animals to knock out offspring that no one else wants. x

It is frustrating! x

There are many many on craiglist... I found homes for a few fosters that way...

I would NOT judge so quick either... I had to return a dog since she was a hybrid( yes wolf) and at the shelter was perfectly behaved not so much in a house with at the time 5 cats .... And My health went down hill also within the time I had her thus not allowing me to exercise her enough

I haven't seen any pet adverts on freecycle in chicago. I woud have figured there'd be more in a major city. I do find lots and lots of cats on craigslist, but it's usually too tough to look at them because the same person will post 10 or 15 at once and I just have a feeling they're mostly BYB situations for the named breeds, and irresponsible owner's for the D_H (Domestic ____ Hairs).
