Skin problem

Hi everyone,

I've just noticed that our new adoptee has small patches (about a quarter inch across) of dry, flakey skin (some of it very dark) on the back of his back legs, just below the joint. One leg is worse than the other. I removed the dead skin gently and the fur came out with it, leaving a little bald patch! The skin underneath is pink and looks normal.

It doesn't seem to be bothering him, I haven't noticed him fussing with the area at all, and when I was removing the skin he slept through the whole thing.

We've only had him a week so I don't know what state he was in when he lived on the street. Is this something to be worried about?

Just a note, it doesn't really look like ringworm.

I adopted a little stray kitten from a shed and he has pretty bad dry skin problems but I have never seen anything like you are describing.

Has he been checked for mange? I know mange causes crusty skin and hair loss in the area where the parasite is, if it continues to get worse or doesn't clear up he should get looked at

Animals can be weird about showing distress our family had one that got a severe internal infection and was pretty much dead and she walked around like everything was fine...

Hope he's alright!

Bear had the EXACT same thing happen to him. He has one spot on his front leg. I had him to the vet twice and each time, they said it didn't look like ringworm. It hasn't spread - on him or to me or the other animals...so who knows. The skin is dry and flaky on him too. If you find out what it is, please let me know!

I don't know if it's serious, but you should take him to the vet just to make sure.
