Kasey, my rescue tortie who I have quite a bond with, is scheduled to go the vet on Dec. 28 for a procedure to remove a cyst.

This is a cyst on the right, fore-most nipple which looks like a blister, about the size of a pea. The vet said it did not look cancerous, he drained the fluid from it with a hypo and sent it away for pathology. They confirmed it was not cancerous but could not identify it, they said there was a chance it was pre-cancerous.

After draining it, it came back in a few days, no bigger, just the same size as it was.

She is happy, acting normal, the cyst doesn’t bother her, it is mobile with the skin.

We went through quite a process of questions with the vet and did not come to this decision lightly, basically, the thought process went like this;

Want to do the right thing, dilemma;

Surgery best option; or over reaction to something that is benign?

Wait and routinely observe best option; or ignoring something that needs treatment?

1.) What would the procedure be, i.e., how complicated might it be? (Answer; not overly so)

2.) Assume general aesthetic? (Answer; yes)

3.) If general aesthetic, how much risk/issues for a 10+ year old cat? (Answer; they are confident it is a non-issue)

4.) She has problems with her back legs due to old injury, doesn’t voluntarily stretch them out to the rear, would this be a problem during surgery? (Answer; will be taken into account)

5.) How long would she stay away from home? (Answer; she goes in at 8:30, home in the afternoon)

6.) If she was under general aesthetic, could her teeth be cleaned at the same time or would that be too tough on her? (Answer; yes, no problem. this is a a good by-product of the process, she could use it)

7.) If surgery is done, best to do after the holiday season? (I am home that week, the vet office is open on the 29th and 30th, for two days after the procedure)

I asked one more question that I always ask a vet; ïf this was your cat, what would you do?”, they said they would do it.

They will do blood work before the procedure to check for any issues that might cause problems with the aesthetic.

I am not one to choose surgery lightly, as an option, all I can go on is an educated opinion and I have decided this is the right thing to do for her.

First, best wishes for a successful procedure and a quick return to health - and I think you did the right thing. I think she'll be more comfortable with the cyst gone (I was when mine was taken off - TMI, I know), and I think you asked all the right questions.

Thanks.

It will be tough on me, too. She can't have food after 9:00PM on Monday and my girl like her food.

I don't like putting her through this because she trusts me and she had a rough 5 or 6 years before I brought her home, I can't make her understand why she is going to the vet and going through the experience.

However, she goes in in the morning and we're supplosed to get her back home later the same day, so that's something, anyway.

When Carly had a cyst on her neck, I chose to have it removed. The wait and see approach makes me nervous with cats because they can hide so much. But like you, I did weigh the risk of surgery. That would be the biggest factor in my decision.

Now when we found out that Much had a tumor between her spine and lungs, we decided to not do the surgery. She was 16 years old and this would be extremely major surgery on a younger cat. It was more humane to monitor her and we helped her over the bridge last July.

Yeah, I was leaning toward the wait and see because it isn't bothering her, but I was concerned for the same reasons.

The vet drained it twice, both times it came back in about 3 days, never getting bigger but not something we want to stay there if it can be removed.

I did not want something getting out of hand and wishing I had dealt with it when I could. With some trepedation, we are opting for the procedure.

It is tough to lose a good friend, I think intellectually, we can think we are prepared for it, but we're really not.

I think in that situation, it was the right approach.

I got Kasey in to the vet just before 8:30 AM and she was home by 5:00 PM.

She seems fine except for being a little grogy, I was told everything went well. Her teeth were cleaned too, no extractions.

She has pain med.'s and antibiotics, this isn't a problem, she likes them in a small piece of cheese (the only people food she gets, only for pilling).

She goes back on Jan. 8th to have the stitches out.

Currently, she is crashed out in a heated pet bed

Thanks for the comments.

Resting??

This morning she is playing by herself with a toy like a kitten.

I am surprised and pleased at the same time.

It's great news to hear that Kasey has recovered and is playing and, so, feeling good.

Happy New Year!
