Urine smell

I am asking this on behalf of my sister. She has two female cats that are spayed. She cleans the litter box daily and has it tucked away, however, she is having a hard time keeping the urine smell at bay. No matter how much she scoops and scrubs the box the ammonia smell still lingers. She's tried the expensive litters and all that jazz but it's not helping. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how she can get rid of the odor? And is it normal for their urine to be THAT strong?

Thanks!

I have 5 cats of my own, and I highly recommend Fresh Step clumping with odor blocking crystals. We took in an unneutered male foster a few years ago and his urine was unbelievable.....like, throw open the windows and break out the face masks in the middle of Ohio winter BAD. Fresh Step did mask it very well, and it's own fragrance is light. I've used it ever since, and occasionally will forget myself and try to switch to something 'cheaper' and always regret it. And my boxes (all 7 of them) are cleaned very regularly (usually daily).

I don't think, though, that a cat's urine should be THAT strong.... My suggestion would be to up her water intake and hope to dilute it some. Usually if it's strong, it's pretty concentrate.

Also, I wonder if kitty may be peeing outside of the box (but nearby?) and your sister may not know it, so no matter how clean the box is, the smell remains?

What are they eating? Food can definitely affect urine smell.
All my boxes are treated with Microban, an antimicrobial/antibacterial material that has completely eliminated all urine odor from my Box. Here is a great Microban treated Box. I also use Dr. Elsey's Precious cat Litter, which although unscented, has great odor control.

They are sort of stressed financially right now, so its the cheap food for the time being..which will hopefully change in the near future since one of the cats is well, she's huge lol. I'll definitely suggest that litter box ifs worth it. Seems like a reasonable price.
I am starting to think they might not be getting too though. A family member has been very ill and my sister has been at the hospital for several weeks..so they cats are mostly stuck on dry food since no one is really home. She is thinking of investing in a water fountain for them, so maybe that will help. Thanks for the tips.

I swear by that litter box... And the price, considering the free shipping, is very reasonable IMHO... It gets no odor whatsoever! Now, I gotta tell you that changing the food for a better quality one will probably help too! good luck!
