LOTS of pictures of Athena-my dobie

I had the flu yesterday so today is picture day as I'm bored out of my mind sitting around all day feeling blah.

I just love this picture! She thinks she's a lap dog That's my fiance Blake

She also thinks she can use our pillows...

I asked her what she was doing on the pillow

Sad Athena...

Trying to make mommy laugh with her cartoon tongue, I swear it unrolls when she yawns!

When she realized mommy was going to cave and let her stay

I tried feeding her that tomato and she didn't think it was food but kept rolling it around in her mouth to make mommy happy She's a nut

With Thor her big brother, lol

Keeping an eye on the pet rats, she 'plays' with them all the time. She barks and does the play stance with them. That was their temp cage.

She's two now and has filled out a lot!

And right before she play attacked me

My goodness, she is absolutely STUNNING!

She's beautiful. I'd sort of forgotten how they look with cropped ears, since you don't see that on this side of the Atlantic any more.

Thank you! She's definitely a looker! We always told her it's a good thing your beautiful because you are CRAZY!!! She was a headache as a puppy. I was not prepared for all the energy that this breed has. I grew up with them as a kid, but you don't remember that kind of stuff when you're a kid!

Thank you! They look very different natural that's for sure! I've done some small shows with her and hope to get into it a bit more this year now that I'm graduated from college. To show they need to be cropped, it's purely cosmetic, I just prefer them cut.

A very pretty girl.

Beautiful dog. I love her color. I've never paid much attention to dogs and have to say I never realized that dobermans' ears were cropped. I guess if I ever saw one with uncropped ears I probably didn't recognize it as a doberman.

She's GORGEOUS! I love Dobermans, they're one of my dream dogs.

Awwww she is absolutely gorgeous, my neighbour has a dobie, they are one of my fave dogs. Lovely pics and I love her "big brother" so cute. x

She's gawgeous!

I grew up with one of those (gasp) "vicious" dogs, and my parents have one now. She just turned 5 and STILL has not burned off all that puppy energy.

Thank you! I've only seen pictures of them totally uncut and I thought they were mutts. Even the natural ears I didn't realize what kind of dog they were at first! It's crazy what a difference it makes. I got her so I could feel safe alone at home, in my car, or out for walks. The ears definitely make her look a bit more intimidating!

Thank you! I've always thought they were the most beautiful dog breed!

Thank you! It drives my fiance nuts when I call him that, but he is her big brother! He's 3 and she's 2

Thank you! I get a lot of comments about her being a "vicious" dog in joke and truth. The funniest thing is when moms aren't paying attention and their children start petting her and they turn around and say "DON'T PET THAT DOG!!!"

I remember when you got her as a puppy. Where does the time go? She looks very loved.

Oh man does it fly!!! I've only done some small obedience shows with her. I'm hoping to do more shows this year now that I'm not a college student and have free weekends. I worked weekends before, so taking one weekend off was actually taking the whole 25 hour week off. It was tough!

She is absolutely GORGEOUS!! Dobies are such lovey dogs! I grew up with two, back when they had such horrible reputations, but you couldn't have asked for better dogs. At the time, we actually had 3 dogs, 2 dobies (1 male, 1 female) and a Boston Terrier (male). The male dobie thought he was as small as the Boston and the Boston thought he was as big as the dobie. The 2 boys grew up together as puppies and were best buds. We got our 2nd dobie, a female, when the boys were about 1.5. She had been abused and was so scared when she came to us. We loved her, though, and she became the loviest dog ever!

Our male dobie would back up to the couch, prop his hiney on the couch and sit with just his front paws on the floor. He also thought he was a lap dog!! I used to sleep on a twin bed with all three dogs. Talk about crowded! Fantastic dogs, though, and so gentle if given the appropriate love, care, and training.

Thank you! They are the best dogs ever, save for their crazy amount of energy Everyone that meets her loves her. The funny thing is that when I'm out with both dogs and someone wants to pet the dogs I say, pet this one (pointing to the dobie), and "if you are going to get bit by someone it's going to be from him" (pointing at the 5 pound chihuahua)

Just saying Dobermans can be shown with natural ears in the US too. The ears do not determine the quality of the dog.

Are you only showing obedience? Have you considered doing any conformation or protection sports?

I really wanted a working GSD to do Schutzhund with but I've been seeing more and more Dobermans and think they would be a little easier to work with. The same amount of drive but maybe less neurosis. The only thing that worries me are the risks of cardiomyopathy. Of course, this is long down the line because managing two dogs in two different sports is enough for me right now :p

She's really grown into a pretty dog!

While I agree that ears (cropped or floppy) don't make a dog they certainly do matter in the show ring to a significant extent at this time.
Have you shown in the conformation ring with a dropped ear Dobe? Only a very small number have finished with dropped ears. The conformation ring in Dobermans is extremely competitive and harder than other breeds, even with dogs who are valid show prospects. And it can easily be extremely expensive in Dobes.
I would not suggest a newbie show an uncropped dog in the states unless that dog came from a pedigree and background of finished champions and was a quality dog who had a good honest chance; and the owner had the time and money to dedicate and extremely thick skin in case they find themselves losing more than winning the points, which can happen with any dog any given day.
In obedience, agility, or any other of the dog sports the ears don't matter at all.

This is true and a valid concern, the last Doberman I had pass away had cardio at the time of death. It is a horrible disease. Did you know they have come out with a genetic gene marker test for this in Dobes late last year? I had mine tested if for nothing else to support this type of research.

Isn't this the truth. I feel like a soccer mom and we don't have human children

I'm glad to read that, cropping is illegal here along with tail docking in most states so Dobermans are shown with natural ears and tails. Perhaps one day the US will catch up with other countries, along with declawing cats too.

Thank you! I'm working on becoming a member of an AKC group right now. I'm sure I'm in, but I have to get the paperwork finalized before I can say I'm an actual member. I didn't realize it wasn't just a sign up and your in thing! For those that don't know you have to have two sponsors in the group recommend you to the club, and you also have to go to a couple meetings before you can become a member (at least in the club I'm joining).

I really want to do tracking, maybe agility, obedience, and possibly conformation. I know she's probably never going to make it to the big shows in conformation, but it would be fun just to be involved.

Yep, if you want to do conformation showing in the states they need cropped ears. People can say all they want, the judges can say all they want, the rule books can say all they want, but the traditional dobie is always going to be in the judges mind when he/she makes their decision.

I haven't heard about that gene marker test. I might have to think about getting that done before starting agility. I haven't really done any agility with her because she recently turned two. She does go on horse rides me with which involves a lot of walking/trotting, I might have to think about it just for that.

They can be shown, but the person is delusional if they think they are going to win with a natural dobie. Judges are looking for the traditional dobie, there's no secret about it.
