Cats and other pets

Hi, sorry not sure exactly which forum this should go under.

I have had cats all my life, as well as birds/parrots.

I currently have a 14 year old cat and two 2 year old cats (one of which I adopted from a petshop {don't judge, it was stupid but I wouldn't trade her for the world}, one of which I started feeding as a stray when he was a kitten)

My 14 year old is half blind and half deaf and has never even looked at any of my pet birds.

My 2 year old petshop kitten Meatloaf was raised with my birds. She sits with my birds, they walk on her, pull her hair, play with her toys.

My 2 year old stray Blackie was about 5 months old when I found him. He overall does not bother my birds, but sometimes he can't help himself and he will grab their tails.

My question is, have any of you ever had cats and birds and experienced the horrible event that your once sweet kitty that never harmed your birds, all of a sudden went berserk and slaughtered them?

This fear is of course always in my mind and I never leave the birds/cats unattended, but very often my birds will walk on my cats, pull their fur, chew on their toes, etc. Like I said before, the most aggression my 2 cats have shown towards my birds has been patting them with their paws. No claws used, just poking at them, touching them, sniffing them, and the occasional tail snatching.

As I'm writing this, I am watching my 2 cockatiels sitting on my dresser with Blackie. They are both walking on him/over him, chewing his fur. He is just laying there, but every so often he will lift his paw and poke and prod at them.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to hear others' experiences.

(I will also mention that I previously had 2 cats, Houdini and Spanelli {RIP} that were also raised as kittens with both of these birds, and the birds could do the same things with them with the same responses: poking and pawing)

I had cats and birds coexisting peacefully for many years. By coexisting, I mean the birds had 'out of the cage time' while the cats had 'relax in this closed room by yourselves for a while' time.

Mixing birds and cats is risky. A playful swat with nails can be deadly to any bird, especially the smaller guys. The kitty may not intend to harm, but can harm just the same. Even something as innocent as kitty grooming the bird can have consequences. Cat saliva and claws contain deadly bacteria that WILL kill a bird.

It's just not worth the risk, if you love your birds. Enjoy them, separately.

(and yes, I know personally of two very 'trusted' kitties that killed birds "out of the blue", much to the shock of their owners).

Yep, I would tend to agree with the above. However good they get along, that instinct is bubbling just beneath the surface. Its not wrong, its just nature.

Better to be proactive than regretful.
