cat sizes

just curious, but when someone says they're cat is large, what weights are considered large? I have an 8 lb and a 10 lb, and was wondering if they were considered "medium" or "large" cats. I guess when I look at them I think of them as just small/medium, mainly because I have a house rabbit that is about 10-11 lbs himself, so it makes them look tiny.

8-10lbs is pretty much average. Some cats are larger structurally too, remember, like Maine Coons. My guy is a coon mix and before he got sick last year, he was 14lbs but not overweight. I find most people who say they have big or large cats, usually mean overweight...like round, lol. So probably cats that SHOULD be in the average size group but are 12+.
I think your kitties are probably good weights but sound like you just have a big bunny.

You have a bunny that's 11lbs? wow! I don't really remember how much my bunny weighed but I know it wasn't anywhere near 11lbs.

Lynxx when he was healthy, was always between 15lbs and 17lbs.

Luna at age 6 months was 8lbs.

Midnight now age 4 months is 7lbs.

A little off topic, but the world record rabbit weighed 42 lb and 4' long, so I guess 11 lb isn't too ridiculous for a hopper.

Right just like cats , bunnys have breeds which averages vary from dwarfs of under 4 lbs to flemish giants that ave 20-30lbs

Ave for a Female cat is 7-9 lbs , male 8-11

I have Larger cats and one ave ... All are proper weight... they are 8-9 lbs for Zoey , 12 for Dahlia , 13 for Sylvie and 15 for Punky

Large by my vets definition( both agree) is a male 13 and over at proper weight or a female 11 and over

Probably the difficult thing with this is that we see cats being categorized for different purposes. I would hope vets have somewhat of a similar idea (like what was already said above), and also separate what is large or small vs fat and skinny. You know, large by size can be Ok weight wise and a very small cat can be extremely fat.

However, I mostly see these Small to XL classifications when I look at adoption lists. There are wild variations. I have seen adult kitten size cat listed as medium (obvious XS!) and huge XL size males called medium. Go figure. Personally I think there is a wide average middle ground where most cats belong and it's medium-large for males and medium for females

I have 2 Ragdolls, which is considered one of the largest domestic breeds. They take up to 4 years to fully mature, males weighing 15-20lbs, and females 10-15.

Bugsy, my male is 3 1/2 yrs old, and weighs 17lbs. Lucky, my female, is 2 yrs and 9 months, and is 12.4 lbs.

Hope, my DLH, is smaller - 10lbs.

Gracie, also a domestic, is probably now weighing around 9lbs or so...

Along these same lines, how tall is tall? I know some cats are shorter than others. Ritz is around 18 months old, and from her head to her rear end (that is, not including the tail) she is around 18 inches long. I imagine height/length of cat also plays into whether a cat is big or just fat. Thanks.

18 inches for a little girls is medium to med/ large... but depending on frame she could still be small/ medium... Ie Siamese body type

Wow! What a beautiful bunch! The kitty on the top ledge is gorgeous! Love the eyes. And yes, your bunny is a big guy. They all look happy

Most of the cats I've had over the years have averaged about 8-10 pounds. My current bunch varies wildly. Ash & Shadow both are 16 lbs and Spaz is about 13 lbs. Those 3 are my senior kitties. Most of the younger ones are in that 8-10 range, except Arlene (2 years old) who's about 5 lbs, and Misschief, who at 10 1/2 months, weighs 3 1/2 lbs. I've nicknamed her Little Miss. She's perfectly healthy, just really small. Her brother Spartacus is more than twice her size at 8 lbs. You can see how small she is in the picture on my cat page which was taken when she was 7 months old.
