Fat Cat vs. The Litter Box

Hi. I have a quick question on something that has been happening. I have an overweight cat (5lbs overweight) and he keeps leaving pee spots (diameter of a pencil eraser) immediately or shortly after he uses the litter box on the couch, bed, etc.

Now is this because he gets pee on his fur and then sits down? Or is it something more serious?

If this just started recently (new behavior), it could be an UTI... Is he going to the litter box more often, and his pee is really small like that? In the litter box as well? Is he licking himself more often too?
Since he is a male, pay very close attention to him - UTIs can be very dangerous to male cats... I would take him to the vet for a urinalysis for peace of mind.
