I used to free feed our cats until i found this out:
The cat's digestive system, being that of a carnivore, produces a lot of alkaline when it is digesting food. This is because traditionally cats eat raw meat and raw meat is acidic and thus to digest it, you need alkaline stomach acid...
So where am i going with this?
Okay...
If your cat is eating all day, then their digestive system is constantly producing alkaline stomach fluid to digest the food it has eaten. So... your cats system remains for the most part of the day, alkaline. An overly alkaline system is a common cause of the dreaded Urinary Tract Infection.
In the wild a cat would hunt maybe twice a day, or on a bad day where prey was small they might hunt 3 times... But essentially this means that, inbetween hunts your cats system has time to re-adjust the ph levels towards being more acidic which is how it's supposed to be....
Anyway.
I just thought i'd share this information with you as we used to free feed... and now, after a bit of research it sorta makes more
sense to feed them twice a day...
Cheers!
