I have two cats -- one is five, the other 8 months. Both are indoor/outdoor. The youngest one, several times a day, will suddenly run like something is chasing it, then bite her rear (on her back, not butt) right by her tail. Sometimes bites the tail.

The older one now does the same thing. I try to get them and scratch for them, but they don't want me to touch them when this is happening.

I've searched for fleas (which we don't have here) and other visible "bugs", but can't find a thing. It's one of those things that if I go to the vet without some insight, it won't happen there...like the car rattle that stops at the mechanic!

Has anybody ever seen anything like this or have any ideas?

I am going through this right now! When it first happened, I took my cat to the vet and it did turn out to be fleas. I had never actually seen them myself though.
Unfortunately for me, treating the fleas did not stop the symptoms.
It can be a number of things from fleas, impacted anal glads, allergies, or psychological issues. I have been working very hard to find the cause of my cats symptoms but it isn't easy.
I suggest you take your kitties to the vet and at the very least get a basic exam, starting with fleas, since both your cats are doing it, once that is ruled out, you can go through all the other things it might be. Just explain the symptoms...and if you have a camera, even record a video to show the vet.

One possibility would be feline hyperesthesia, though if both your cats are affected some sort of parasite or allergen is more likely. Our 11-year-old male has hyperesthesia, and his attacks can be triggered/worsened by food allergies, in his case soy and beet pulp in dry foods.

Just to be sure because both of them are acting this way, you should take them to the vet.
