Just discovered my son's indoor only 5 yr. old kitty has worms. How did this happen? This is a 2 cat/3 human baby family. Naturally we are concerned for the triplets. He's taking infected kitty to the vet this afternoon.

Dusty's Mom, what type of worm does the kitty have?

A single flea, if it gets indoors and is ingested by the cat, might be able to give it tapeworm. And even a small bit of raw meat or raw fish might give a cat worms.

I didn't see it, but apparently some sort of amber, yellowish worm. Didn't sound like tapeworm to me. I'm curious about what the vet says. I think my son is taking kitty to the vet shortly.

He was trying to avoid taking the cat in, but she wouldn't cooperate with a stool sample.

That's very interesting! It could be that it traveled in on their clothing or shoes and somehow was ingested.

Hmm. That sounds more like roundworms.

If it is, then, as Stephanie said, a bit of feces could have been tracked into their home with no one noticing it, and the cat might have ingested it, either deliberately or while cleaning its feet.

Parker was an only cat at my parents and strictly indoors. Our disgusting neighbors (they live in a duplex) had a flea infestation and they got on my parents side and bam, fleas and worms for Parker...but yeah the vet even said the can hitch a ride on clothes and stuff. Only takes one flea.
