Keeping fur soft

Thread Starter
Hi all,

My kitten has really soft fur at the moment, like mink to touch. She is a short haired tabby. I feed her on James Wellbeloved kitten food with occasional milky treats. Are there any tips or techniques for keeping her fur soft, and general coat maintenance? Thanks in advance.

with short hairs that are not rabbit like use a comb or non slicker brush... The "experts " will have more to share

Honestly, feeding a food that works well for your cat will do the most for a coat. Fur, like human hair, is dead after it grows out. To make it "healthy" and strong you have to provide the right nutrients.

But, also like people, cats have slightly different coat types. If your cat is that soft now it should hopefully remain that way.

I've not noticed any brush or comb really affecting how the coat grows, only as a way to untangle and remove loose fur. For my DSHs I just use a furminator and a flea comb after. The comb catches any loose fur I missed.

I agree, it seems to be food more than anything else. When we got Clyde his fur was kind of dull, dirty, and matted. He is short-haired, but very very thick fur. After about 2 years of Taste of the Wild dry and Wellness wet food, his coat is perfect. (It's also possible he wasn't grooming much as he was depressed in his other house when the only other cat, his buddy, died.)

Food plays a huge role as others have stated. I add a little fish oil or olive oil to the boys' food now that it is winter - drier air from the furnace affects their skin and coats, too.

I use either a Zoom Groom or a Furminator to get at the shedded undercoat (the boys seem to prefer the Z-G) and then a fine nylon comb - like a man's pocket comb - to get the loose hair... Sometimes a soft bristle brush to pick up even more hair on the surface. After they are deshedded, combed and brushed.. their fur is very shiny and soft.
