Liquid hiccup

Hi, my 15 year old female cat was diagnosed with asthma about 4 years ago. I give her Flovent every few days. I started 2 x a day but new vet said to cut down. I have noticed off and on that she will do something like a hiccup or something with her throat like liquid came up and she swallowed it. I've told the vet about it for years and they never can say what it is.

Does anyone know what i am talking about? And what it is?

Reflux, bronchial issue?? I have no idea.

Has there been recent blood work? Recent chest x-rays? My guess, and yes it's just a guess, is that there is some inflammation/congestion going on. That's one way to "abort" a cough - both my cats and myself do this to try to hold off a cough. If your new vet has not suggest any check up of the lungs after telling you to decrease meds or after hearing this you should probably look for a second opinion just in case.

We have two asthmatic kitties and they both cough out a clear sputum towards the end of the attack. The accumulation of this sputum in their lung airways is what brings the attack on. Once they can cough out this mucus the attack stops. It's a good thing that she can eliminate the mucus from her lung airways and it does not matter that she swallows it.

Hi, she gets blood work 2x a year and this is the 2nd vet i've told this to. I just want to make sure it's not inflammation and i'm leaving her untreated.
No recent x-rays.

It's not really a cough. It's more like liquid came up from her throat and she gulps it back down. It doesn't happen all the time and i was wondering if it was related to asthma. She also does this thing where she licks the roof of her mouth/lips often. I've told 2 vets about this for years too and they never give me an answer. I've read that could be anything from nausea to a sign of kidney problems. One vet did say maybe she has a lot of liquid in her mouth. My cat does drool. I just wanted to make sure it's not a health issue.

On a different subject: my new vet told me to switch her food from c/d (she had crystals in urine a couple years earlier) to a protein diet. I did and 6 months later the blood tests showed signs of Kidney problems. I then switched to Royal Canine LP and 6 months later blood work for kidney is back to normal but calcium is high which they said could be a sign of cancer.
My cat is normal, active, looks good either wise.

Thank you for all the responses! I want the best care for my cat and the vets have not been answering about the liquid hiccup thing she does occasionally.

What was your vet's reason for the switch and what did they say when the higher protein diet didn't work for your senior cat? (more precisely, what the heck were they thinking? )

Why not go ahead and get a recent chest x-ray on her? It will answer whether her current medicine regime is working or not.

I have one currently on flovent, and two more that will probably end up on it within the next couple of months. In their case it's chronic inflammatory bronchitis. A bit different to asthma, but still very damaging to their lungs.
