She's in heat! Help!

I'm not sure where this thread should go, but I need some help! Maggie is in heat! She keeps trying to woo my male neutered cat, but he is having none of it, considering she's been terrorizing him for the past 8 weeks. He is twice her size and scared of her!

Oh yeah, she has a baby. She was pregnant when she came to me as a stray and she gave birth to a little baby (yes, just one!) about 2 months ago. I thought I was supposed to wait until after the kitten was weaned to get the mommy spayed, but she's still nursing. She's only about 9 maybe 10 months old herself.

What should I do? Get her spayed before the baby is weaned? Is there any way to relieve her? Sometimes she's resting but when she is up and about she's cooing and meowing and trying so hard to get Sebastian to mate with her. How long will this last?

I moved this into Pregnant Cat & Kittens, I think you'll be most likely to get your answers there, but my 2 cents is: at 8 weeks the kitten is old enough to start weaning. I'm not sure how long momma kitty will continue to produce milk after spaying, but I think starting to offer the kitten some wet food to start would be a good idea As far as how long this will last, it varies greatly amongst cats from a day to several days

Talk to your vet - I think the kitten is old enough to be weaned, but some vets do not like to spay a cat in heat - the process is more difficult due to engorged blood supply in the uterus. SO I would make an appointment in a week or so's time.

I agree with the others, both.

I want to add. It is true most avoid to spay moms giving milk. Nonetheless, sometimes they do emergency spaying, perhaps because of some complications in connections with the birth.
In practice they goes well, and the mom continues to nurse ìe gives milk, often almost immediately after she has recovered.
Only real difficulty may be if the wound and stitches goes across the breasts, and she has many kittens...

But with only one kitten as here there are always some breast uncut.

Good luck!

Well, of course Lady picks the ninnie that is close to where they would do the spay. But, I'll call my vet. Thank you!

My vet said that the mama cat can be spayed when the babies are 9 weeks old. It's possible she'll still nurse after the spay--Sonja let Scotty nurse after she was spayed, in fact she allowed it until he was nearly a year old, LOL.

My vet doesn't like to spay while a cat is in heat. When Dot went into heat 3 days before her scheduled spay he made me wait 10 days. But I've spoken to other vets who say it doesn't matter to them. So ask your vet to see what he/she prefers.

She will probably stop calling after a few days. But cats cycle in and out of heat almost constantly, so try to get her spayed ASAP so she doesn't go back into heat.

I think it depends on the vet, but most around here will spay when the kittens are 6 weeks old. It certainly sounds like she is ready to be spayed though. Good luck!

If the baby is 8 weeks old, its more/less done nursing. Separate mom and baby and call your vet and schedule a spay asap. Hopefully she will be out by then but I'd keep her separated from everyone in her own little room till she is spayed.

The kitten should be eating canned and dry food now anyway.

Yes, the baby has been eating both canned and dry kitten food for about 3 weeks now. I was just concerned because I did notice occasionally that she was nursing still.

The spay is happening soon! I am going out of town this weekend but my mom is taking care of my cats while I'm gone. She's a huge cat person and fosters cats and takes care of them so she can probably take care of Maggie if I get her spayed before I leave.
