Ok, so we bought a goat with Heifer International. It's part of our present to our grandchildren. We felt that, in addition to their presents, we should do something else. We were talking to our DIL's family on Sunday and next year, we may buy a cow between all of us.

Goats give milk and you can make cheese from their milk, too. For a lot of children, goat milk can sometimes be better for them than cow's milk. Plus, they have babies.

We also donated to a local no-kill shelter in honor of Banshee, our Rainbow baby.
We've been donating to the shelter now for quite awhile around Christmas. But when Banshee died last year, we decided to give our donation in honor of her.

Your two gifts truly represent the meaning of Christmas.
Thank you for caring so deeply.
You have made a difference.

What an awesome idea! I would love to have freshly squeezed milk each day, and goat milk actually tastes good when fresh (I can't drink the stuff in the supermarket though).
So do your grandchildren live on a farm?

Heifer International is an organization that helps children and poor families. The donation, whether it's a goat, cow, camel, sheep, rabbits, etc., will help families learn to care for an animal and the animal will give milk and cheese to the families.

You can give a share of an animal....I think a share of a goat, for example, is $10. We just bought the goat in honor of our grandchildren. We hope it's a way to help our kids realize the value of giving in addition to receiving. You can donate money for trees, for honeybees, you can donate a water buffalo if you want to. We sent the donation to Heifer International.

Our grandson now will give many of his older toys to organizations in the area that gives them to kids who don't have the toys that he does. When his parents first started the practice, he wasn't so agreeable, but now he "gets it" and he chooses which toys to give and he doesn't give them crappy toys either. Not bad for a soon-to-be-five year old. They're working on his sister now, too, to undertand the concept of giving back....she'll be three years old in a week.

When I donated to foster an animal, they said they would send me a pic of the animal I was donating to help. I had said give this to any animal in need, I didn't care which animal it was...yes they sent me a pic of a cute goat who they had found in pretty bad conditions. I was glad to help him.

What a fantastic gift! You are teaching your grandchildren that the best gifts are not plastic and have to be stored somewhere. Experiences are the best gift, and the family's goat is going to give them so much.

I really love your idea!

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Glad I came back to the thread, because I'm not familiar with the org, and I thought you meant you bought them a GOAT - to care for, and to learn how to milk and make cheese.

But this is a totally different kind of gift - one that's about so much more!
What a wonderful idea!
