After months of trips to the vet, xrays, urine cultures, and months of antibiotics, my kitty (lola), was diagnosed with Feline Idiopathic Cystitis as a diagnosis of elimination. From my understanding it basically means she is so anxious that the protective wall of her bladder broke down and caused her bladder to bleed. She is an indoor/outdoor kitty and is peeing very frequently (outside her litter box when inside), sometimes there is very visible blood in the urine. She just received this diagnosis on Wednesday. The vet gave us three different treatment options: changing her food to special diet that makes the urine less acidic (we can't do this one - we can't afford it), a medicine called cosequin to help build that protective layer in her bladder back up, or an anxiety medication. I choose the cosequin and anxiety medication. It was been 6 days now and I haven't noticed a change. The only other option is euthanasia
but I'm going to give it at least a month before I reevaluate. I'm just really hoping the treatment starts working. Has anyone had any experience treating this disease? Did it work? And how long did it take? I'm so worried! Thanks so much!

There are urinary foods that are not prescription foods out there... would you be able to afford that? It is believed that Consequin helps, but nothing is proved...
Can you rehome her to someone who has the finances to take care of her? This shouldn't be a reason for euthanasia IMHO... If you keep the stress down, feed he a urinary diet, chances are she can be just fine...
Any chances she could be brought to live inside only?

This is a lifelong issue of an unknown origin ( that is what the name equals , bladder issue of unknown origin)

there are supplements avail to help .... UTI formulated foods May help, they wont if main issue is something like allergies or stress

Uti food is likely the least $$$ over the long term ... ask the vet if a over the counter one is feasible.....

I also recommend making kitty stay in and getting Brand new potty boxes and litter
